Lead possible weight. A flat-sided plain fragment possibly cut from a larger cast sheet, with up to eight possible sides; patinated and now bent to concavo-convex form. The mass could permit this to have represented just over six units of 4.07gms, which was a module thought to have been used for silver bullion transactions under Danish rule, or one ora/ore, the Scandinavian equivalent of a [slightly underweight] ounce. The Viking-Age use of weights representing the ora and its sub-units has been identified by Dave Haldenby at several contemporary sites in the East Riding, using large V…

Lead weight of uncertain but probably medieval or post-medieval date. It has two flat and perfectly circular opposing faces, one larger than the other, and a straight-sloping edge between them. It is trapezoidal in cross-section. The larger face is decorated with eight straight lines radiating from the centre to the edge, each composed of multiple opposing pairs of short oblique incised grooves: the effect is like a fern or a fishbone, but without a spine. The radiating lines are not equally spaced and it seems that the intention might have been to place them in four pairs. However, th…

An incomplete lead alloy Weight of Medieval to Post Medieval date (AD 1066-1800). The weight is of sub-conical form and has a flat base and tapering sides which taper to a rounded upper end, which is truncated by a break. There is a circular perforation which runs through the length of the object to the base. There are a number of shallow linear grooves in the sides and base of the object, likely due to post-depositional agencies. The weight does not fit obviously into any standard systems of weight measurement, even allowing for a possible missing suspension loop. It could be a …

A complete cast lead-alloy weight or steelyard weight of uncertain date, possibly medieval to post medieval date c.AD 1300-1700. Lead weight. Cast line weight, of elongated oval or teardrop form and of an angular rhomboid section with a projecting beaded edge all around. There may be a faintly moulded herringbone pattern on one or both sides which seems to have randomly been supplemented by crudely incised strokes. Torn at its narrower upper end, probably marking the loss of a suspension loop. Patinated. A group of similar weights come from a stratified context at Hull, Myton Street, where a 14th-century date is proposed, and others occasionally nod to their primary function with piscine ornamental motifs. Sugge…

A perforated lead object, probably a weight of unknown date, AD 43 - 1800. It is a sub-spherical globular object with a concave base and a central hole running through it of 3-4mm diameter, now filled with soil. The object is 20.9mm long, 24.2mm in diameter and weighs 69.49g. The mass does not obviously fit into any standard system of weight measurement, so it is perhaps a line weight or similar, designed to add mass rather than to measure it.
