Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an upstanding rim or recess on its upper surface. Dave Haldenby kindly comments that this may leave the date uncertain, as well as the mass if the recess were to indicate the loss of an inserted object. The definition of the form is especially crisp and might open the possibility of a Roman date, perhaps as a [slightly overweight] half uncia, or even as a later half ounce under the averdepois system. The present mass does not suggest close correspondence with suspected Viking Age systems of measurement. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Diame…

Lead probable weight. Cast discoid weight with a plain cross or saltire moulded in bold relief on its upper surface. Dave Haldenby kindly considers this object to be of uncertain date due to this atypical decoration, which might rather be expected in an Anglo-Saxon or later Christian context. In the former, it might have represented an imprecise four mancus value - the mancus, a gold coin valued at 30 silver pennies, weighed 4.82gms. However, the use of a weight made of material which might readily be tampered with to check payments in gold seems unlikely, especially when its correspon…

Complete Roman - Early Medieval lead alloy probable steelyard weight, c.AD 43-410. A cast conical lead weight with small hole through its centre. It is possible that the body of the weight was either cast in two stages or cast in an open mould. The sides are uneven and slightly damaged, either through use or deposition. A tall plano-convex form might appear on a Roman steelyard weight where the iron hook was withdrawn before deposition - there is no trace of rust staining. Lead pump seal weight. Cast D-shaped plate with bevelled edges and a projecting fungiform lug with facetted beaten end on its underside, of a form superficially resembling that of a detached shoe heel. The lug engaged with a slot in an oiled leather seal [lost] for a pump chamber during its operation, to maintain the vacuum necessary for its functioning. Lightly patinated. This is a small version of a relatively common object class marking the processes of rural land drainage. The grey tint of metal may suggest this to be relatively recent in date, though the technology of manually ope…

Lead is a heavy but soft metal and it is therefore more probable that this artefact started as a sphere and has deformed to gain flatter sides under its own weight. Lead weight. A sub-conical weight made in two distinct stages. Initially, a fragment of cast lead sheet of thickness 2.3mm was tightly rolled. The metal of this component is patinated where it appears in the rounded base. The roll was then dipped into molten lead or placed in a larger mould which was filled with eutectic metal. The jacketing layer is not markedly patinated, though patches of white fabric may represent either protrusion of the rolled core or a surface which has been lost elsewhere, the former deemed the more likely. The mass may suggest this to have represented two aver…
