A complete copper alloy trade weight, one of a set that would have stacked. It is circular with a raised rim, and the weight would suggest that it is 1/2 ounce. Inside are the stamps of a laver or coffee pot, the inspection mark of the Worshipful Company of Founders, who controlled the lawful making of weights in London and for three miles around (Withers and Withers 2011, page 78). Also a sword, which is the mark of St Pauls London, and possibly a crowned C, which would date the weight to the reign of Charles 1-11. Similar example on the database are NARC-C1DECA and DEV…

A lead alloy weight. It is shaped like an elongated sphere. The neck is long and flat, sub rectangular in shape. In the centre, near the tip is a suspension hole. The base is flat in the centre and would therefore stand. Weights like these are seen in the Roman (for example SUSS-EA2CCC) and Medieval (NLM-5D1F37) periods. The weight of 192g does not accord with the Roman weight system, as 1 semis is equivalent to 164.5g. It is closer to the Troy system, where 1/2 lb would be 186.5g, this was probably in use from the late 14th century, only being s…

A circular lead alloy weight or token. It might have had a raised portion around the circumference, as a copper alloy or iron weight would typically have, but this has been partially folded down. The base is plain. There are no figures etc. giving weight equivalent Dimensions: it is 52mm diameter and 12mm high. It weighs 200.69g

Late Medieval to early Post Medieval lead alloy shield shaped pan weight. Equates to 60 drams or 3.7 ounces (almost 4 ounces or quarter a pound) under the ‘binary’ averdepois system. The decorated side consists of a crowned fleur-de-lis, surrounded by a recessed border approximately 5mm lower than the decorated area. The border is largely absent from the top edge of the weight. The weight is lightly abraded and the decoration is still clearly visible. Dates to between c1390 and c1588 AD. Length 48mm, width 37mm, thickness 11mm, weight 105.35g. The weight illustrated on p4…

Overall they have an even green patina, the incised lines have orange soil in them. They have a sheen and if made of lead this would be unusual, it is suspected though because of the weight that it is a lead alloy but with a greater proportion of another metal in it, hence designation as copper alloy. A possible lead alloy weight or gaming piece. It is irregular in shape, being triangular at the bottom but with a circular top half. The base is also not straight and is 'kinked' halfway along, although this may be as a result of damage and not deliberate. It is flat on the front and back faces. The base is not smooth but has what may be symbols etched into it. It is difficult to discern if all of these are damage or deliberate but the horseshoe shaped symbol is obviously deliberate, the possible rune next to it is not so clear-cut. It is exceptionally large and heavy…

A fragment of lead alloy bar with a circular cross section. The base is flat and very slighty concave, possibly as a result of casting as opposed to design, and the edges are rounded. Near the other end a collar cast into the piece, and beyond this the bar may have been cut twice, forming a slightly triangular 'end'. This may have been for assay in some way, alternatively it could have been used as a gaming piece and the shape is to distinguish it.  It has been found in association with other lead pieces and may be part of a collection which it was inte…

A lead alloy conical weight or gaming piece. It is of the form of a truncated cone, with curved sides giving the appearance of a bun. There is a central, vertical oval hole, of maximum diameter 6.5mm. The bottom of the weight has an indented circular line around the hole which appears to be a feature of the mould. The weight is just under a multiple of 12 of the standard Dublin weight system of 4.43g, but with a margin of error. Such weights are numerous on the Viking site at Torksey, Lincolnshire (Hadley and Richards, 2016, Figure 1). Dimensions: 13mm high and&nbs…

A possible lead alloy weight, or spindle whorl or gaming piece. It is hemispherical in shape with a flat base and a rounded top. It has a central, horizontal hole of diameter of 7mm. There is no design apparent, although there is some miscasting on the top with small folds in the material. Such items are difficult to date closely, they have though been found at the Viking camp of Torksey, Lincolnshire (Hadley and Richards, 2016, Fig.1). Lead alloy medallion or token reused as a dress or curtain weight. The lead alloy disc is pierced with two holes in the centre, but there is bold script around the edge. It reads JUBILEE and 1809. This was the year of the golden jubilee of George III and it is possible that this was a commemorative medal made for this occasion. On the other side of the medal is an image of a book and possibly of a cross, this might suggest that it was either a locallly made token for the kings jubilee or, more plausibly, a token made to commemorate the anniversay of a local church or similar organ…

Post Medieval lead alloy bell shaped weight. It appears to have been cast in a mould made by the first joint of someone's thumb, the faint imprint of the nail still being visible. Possibly an incomplete suspended weight that was originally intended to have some form of trapped loop in a perforation that was never started. Alternatively it may always have been intended as a standing weight, possibly for a scale pan. Probably dates to between c1540 and c1900 AD. The height is 39mm, diameter is 24mm, and the weight 132.98g.

Early Medieval lead alloy weight with copper alloy inset. The weight is square in plan, and rectangular in section and profile. There is some damage to the lead alloy and is possible that the inset may have had some form of surface embellishment like gilding or enamelling. The square copper alloy inset is decorated with a single central square, flanked on each corner with L-shaped cells. This decorative motif on the mount set into the weight can be closely paralleled in Wales with two examples from Anglesey, one of which was found on the Early Medieval enclosed settlement near Llanbedr…

Medieval to Post Medieval lead or lead alloy 'beehive' or 'skep' suspended weight. Its overall shape is that of a skep, a basket sat open end down, which was traditionally used to house bees. The weight is conical with a rounded pointed apex and a circular base that is slightly concave. A perforation with a diameter of 5mm runs from the apex to the centre of the base. This probably held the suspension loop, most likely made of iron, though there is no staining from oxidising iron to support that supposition.
