Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk

Cast lead discoidal Post Medieval weight. One surface has a small raised circle in the centre surrounded by four concentric equidistant raised rings spaced towards the periphery, the other surface is blank. In thickness the section is wedge-shaped and the top appears to be slightly offset relative to the base, probably due to a mis-cast. Slight fresh damage to a small area of the top corner. Weight 57.92g; 2.04 oz. Similar weights are recorded on the PAS database cf YORYM-16FAA9. Circa AD1500-1800.

A cast lead weight of uncertain date, probably Roman to Post Medieval (AD 43 - 1800). The weight is a short cylinder with a flat base and an angled top, but straight sides. There is a stub of an iron loop or rivet projecting from the centre of the sloping face. The weight has a smooth white patina. It is 25.5mm diameter, 15.9mm thick and 68.5g. This mass does not obviously match any of the main systems of measurement known. It could be a non-standard weight for a specific purpose, or it could be a weight that was used to add mass to another object rather than for weighing.

A cast lead weight of uncertain date, probably Medieval to Post Medieval (AD 1200 - 1800). The weight is sub conical with convex sides and a flat circular base. There is a circular hole running from the centre of the base to the apex, tapering from 14.5mm at the base to 11.1mm at the apex. There is a slight circular groove on the base, half way between the hole and the edge, probably a result of the lead contracting as it cooled. The weight has a smooth grey patina. It is 49.5mm tall, 54.5mm diameter and 709g. The mass does not obviously correspond to any system of measurement, though…

A Medieval or post medieval cast lead alloy cup weight from a set of nested weights, dating from about AD 1300-1600. The weight is a shallow bowl or cup. It has a circular base with the sides flaring up to a wider rim. Unlike other examples on the PAS database, there is no decoration and the cup is completely plain. It has a smooth yellow patina. It is 40.4mm diameter, 10.9mm high and the walls are 3.4mm thick. 56.2g. This mass is 1.98oz, so the weight was probably intended as a two ounce weight. Egan 1998:309-10 discusses a set of six lead cup weights in the British Museum for which…

Lead weight of uncertain date (c. AD 43 - 1800). The object is oval with a circular perforation that does not extend all the way through. A hollowed circular section on the other side of the object may represent an abandoned attempt to extend this perforation. The object is dark grey in colour. It is 24.11mm in length, 21.44mm in width and 17.34mm in thickness. The perforation is 2.43mm in diameter. The object weighs 45.32g. It can be difficult to date lead weights without archaeological context. This example has no diagnostic features that would allow it to be more precisely dated.

Lead conical and perforated weight of post-medieval date (c. AD 1600 - 1800). The weight has a slightly expanded circular base. It is perforated centrally by a circular hole. The object has a white patina with a rough and pitted surface. It is 21.65mm in length, 22.77mm in diameter and weighs 42.09g. There are a number of similar examples recorded on the database, including: LEIC-75FABE and LANCUM-F064D0. There is a great deal of uncertainty over the date of this type of lead weight, although the string retained in the latter example suggests a post-medieval to modern date is most fitting.

Large lead and iron weight of uncertain date, probably Roman or post-medieval. The weight is conical with the remains of an iron suspension loop on the circular base. It has a white patina. It is 79.61mm in length and 49.84mm in diameter. It weighs 768g. It can be difficult to date lead weights without archaeological context. The iron suspension loop is similar to steelyard weights dated to the Roman period, however the conical form of this weight is paralleled by examples that are given a post-medieval date or uncertain date: SUSS-7ACA11, LANCUM-733E0A, GLO-DFCF7C. Without further in…
