Lead weight. Cast elongated oval weight of lentoid section, with moulded detail at one end comprising a blind hollow and a curving groove defining eye and head of a fish, with the rest of the object serving as its body. A hole of diameter 2.5mm at the other would permit the weight to be threaded onto a line. Patinated. The piscine form invites interpretation as a fishing weight. If so, in its size and mass this more closely resembles weights used by modern sea anglers than it does those later medieval versions with loops at one end (e.g. Jackson, S., 'Objects of lead and lead alloy', …

Iron possible weight. Cast heater shield-shaped weight, with slight loss of fabric to the flaking of corrosion at the arises or angles, otherwise in good condition. The mass may suggest this to have represented one half of an averdepois pound, though the manufacture of such an object in iron seems perversely difficult. Some iron implement teeth from agricultural machinery might also acquire such a form through wear, though there is no sign of this having broken from a larger object or setting. Suggested date: Late Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1450-1600 Height: 67.7mm, Width: 53.1mm, Thi…

A complete lead-alloy weight or gaming piece of uncertain date. The object is circular with a prominent projecting rim and concave shape on both surfaces. In the centre there is a split or hole which appears to run through the object. It is undecorated on both surfaces. The metal has a light white patina. The object is 18mm in diameter, 5.6mm thick and weighs 10.2g. The dating of lead objects of this general type is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. This function is not certain however and the object may have served another purpose. Other examples on the database a…

A post medieval copper alloy trade weight from a stacking set. The weight is circular in plan and rectangular in cross section. There are three verification marks: a sword at 2 o'clock (for London), an ewer (for the Founders' Company who had a Royal charter to verify trade weights) at 6 o'clock and the capital letter 'I' for either James I (1603 to 1625) or James II (1685 to 1688) at 12 o'clock. The reverse is flat but has diagonal file marks running across it. The metal has a smooth brown pat…

Lead possible weight. Cast plano-convex object with a central dimple on either side, more prominent - of length 6mm - on the flat side; possibly from an object inserted to remove the fresh-cast object from its open mould. Patinated and abraded. As a weight, the present mass might suggest this to have represented twelve Viking Age units of 4.43gms, also equal to 3 ora/ore, the contemporary version of the ounce. In more recent times it may have represented two [underweight] averdepois ounces. The possible loss of fabric to abrasion, however, could undermine such fine distinctions and mus…
