Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Wirral
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete lead / lead alloy weight dating from the medieval period onwards (c.AD 1200-1700).
The weight is conical in shape with a circular base and sides that narrow slightly to a domed top. A small circular indentation is present at the apex and the base which may suggest an unfinished perforation through the centre of the object. The surface is undecorated and has a light cream / grey patina.
Dimensions: Length 22mm; base diameter 21.8mm; weight 68.17g
Weights can be hard to date due to being a functional item that has not altered significantly over time. Biggs and Withers (2000…

A complete lead weight or spindle whorl dating to the medieval to post medieval period (c.AD 1200-1700).
The object is circular and convex with a flat base. In the centre is a circular perforation measuring 9.8mm in diameter. The object is undecorated and has a dark cream patina.
Dimensions: Diameter 27.9mm; thickness 7.9mm; weight 28.24g
Weights found outside of secure archaeological contexts such as these are difficult to date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Most examples likely date from the medieval period onwards.&nbs…

A complete lead / lead alloy weight dating from the medieval period onwards (c.AD 1200-1700).
The weight has an irregular conical shape with an oval base and sides that narrow slightly towards the top. Through the centre of the body is an oval perforation that has a length of 8mm. The surface is undecorated and has a dark cream patina.
Dimensions: Length 12.9mm; base width 21.3mm; weight 16.09g
Weights can be hard to date due to being a functional item that has not altered significantly over time. Biggs and Withers (2000) note that standing weights made of lead were still used …

A spherical lead probable weight with a hole through the centre, of unknown date, probably Medieval to Post Medieval, AD 1300 - 1800. It is slightly flattened at each end. There is no evidence of an iron hook, but the hole is open and has a perforation of 4.0mm diameter. The weight has a light grey patina and the surface is pitted in places. It is 18.6mm in diameter. It weighs 29.49g.
The mass of 29.49g suggests that it is intended as a 1oz weight in either the Mercantile, Tower or Apothecaries systems of measurement. Alternatively it could be a weight threaded int…

Copper alloy and lead weight. Cast discoid weight with bevelled edge and raised rim, perhaps part of a nested set. It appears a central drilled hole of diameter 5.1mm was filled with lead in an attempt to amend or correct – the original casting has a small chip at its edge and is heavily worn – the mass of a weight representing one averdepois ounce. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800

A pierced flat lead object, possibly a one ounce perforated weight dating from AD 1250 - 1900. It is sub-circular in plan and plano-convex. There is a fairly central irregularly shaped perforation. The surfaces are uneven. Measurements are; length33.2mm, width 30.0mm, thickness 5.4mm and weight 29.62g. The mass is close to one ounce in the Mercantile system used from before AD 1300 (Egan, 1998, page 302).

Copper alloy possible weight. Cast trapezoid flat-sided weight. The mass is near-equivalent to a single unit of 4.43gms as is thought to have governed silver bullion transactions in areas under Danish Viking control. Almost all the weights hitherto considered to relate to this system are made of lead, and most represent multiple units, though there is no reason why other materials could not be put to the same use. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 850-950
Length: 14.5mm, Width: 13.1mm, Thickness: 4.0mm, Weight: 4.38gms

A complete lead conical weight of uncertain dating, most probably of Medieval to Post Medieval date circa AD 1280 - 1800. The weight has a steep dome, with rough tapered sides that widen to a flat circular base. It has a circular perforation going through the object, slightly off-centre which is filled with soil. The mass of 194.39g suggests it was intended a s a half pound weight, in one of the various systems of weight measurement, especially allowing for a missing suspension loop. Dimensions are height 28.7mm, width 35.3mm, diameter of perforation…
