A lead pan weight of Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1280 - 1800. It is octofoil, or circular but scalloped into eight lobes in plan, and the upper face is convex or domed. The lower face is essentially flat, with a slight central depression. There are no markings or decoration. It is 54.2mm diameter, 26.9mm thick and 447g. The mass is broadly equal to 1lb, closest to the Imperial standard (so perhaps from the later end of the date range given) but also close to the Mercantile and Avoirdupois systems used from about AD 1280 onwards. No close parallel has been identified on th…

A lead possible weight of probably Post medieval to Modern date, AD 1500 - 1900. It is an oval thick block of lead, flat on the underside apart from a central hollow, and uneven and slightly domed on the upper face, making it sub-rectangular in profile and cross-section. There are dimples on the sides which may once have been decoration. At one end is an incomplete circular hole through a slight flange near the flat underside. There are also two circular holes through the main body of the weight, one near each end. One is 4.8mm diameter (near the end with the flange hole) and the …

A cast lead alloy artefact, purpose currently unknown, but possibly a weight of unknown date, Roman to Post-medieval, AD 43 - 1900. It is in the form of a cylinder with a waisted central section, so dumb bell, yo yo or bobbin shaped. Each end is slightly convex and there are circumferential striations on the narrower central area. The artefact has a cream patina and there is no visible decoration. Measurements: Maximum diameter at the ends 29.4mm, length 29.5mm, diameter of the central cylinder 22.5mm, weight 151.65g. Each end is uneven with varying t…

A cast lead and iron weight in the form of a truncated square based pyramid, of probable Medieval to Post medieval date AD 1280 - 1800. The weight is square in plan and has angled sides and an uneven square top. The remains of an iron loop project from the top and are visible as two spots of iron on the base. Length: 41.66mm Height: 28.94m Width: 39.61mm Weight: 230g The mass suggetss that this was probably intended as a half pound (1/2lb) weight in the Imperial, Mercantile or Avoirdupois systems. The mass, allowing for the missing part of the loop, is best m…

A lead rectangular object, probably a weight dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval period, AD 1400 - 1700. It is rectangular in plan and uniface with two interconnecting and overlapping V's forming the letter W cast in relief at one end. There is also a cast raised border round the edge of the domino-like plaque. The object is 41.9mm long, 25.5mm wide and thickness is 5.7mm. The reverse is plain. The weight has a mass of 45.1g, which is close to 1/8 lb in the English troy system (46.6g) and 1/8lb in the Tower system (43.7g). It …

An incomplete cast lead and iron cylinder, probably a suspension weight of Medieval or Post medieval date, around AD 1280 - 1800. It is an irregular cylinder which stands on an angle, and has a piece of iron embedded down the centre, perhaps originally a suspension loop. The sides of the cylinder have six flutes of an original seven surviving, some longer than others. These are U shaped grooves running longitudinally along the cylinder. The wight is flat where one would expect a seventh flute if they were equally spaced. Height: 42.41mm Weight: 235g Diameter: …

A complete, cast lead-alloy discoidal possible weight or perhaps a large token of probable Medieval to Modern date about AD 1300-1800. The disc has one irregular face and one smooth face, but no obvious decoration or markings. The diameter is 29.1mm, the thickness is 3.8mm, and the weight is 20.33g. This mass does not fit obviously into any standard system of weighing. It could be a weight for a singular specific purpose, or it could be a large token.

A lead teardrop shaped perforated object, probably a weight and of uncertain date, Roman to Post Medieval, AD 43 - 1800. It has one flat face and one convex face, and may have been cast in a spoon. There is a circular perforation through the narrow end.  The object is 45.2mm long, 32.2mm wide and 10.7mm thick.  It weighs 86.78 grams, which is the equivalent of 3 ounces Imperial, and close to the official mass of a quater pound in the Tower system (87.5g). See Egan (1998) page 302. Compare SWYOR-4E57C5 and SWYOR-443D8C.

A conical lead weight of unknown date, about Medieval to Post medieval, AD 1200 - 1900. It has a flat base and a rounded apex with sides that taper to the top. There is a small, sub-circular depression in the base and an iron suspension loop set into the apex. It is 25.1mm in diameter at the base and 39.2mm high. It weighs 120.4g. The mass suggests that it is a quarter pound weight, and it would be closest to the Mercantile system of 16ouces of 29.2g (116.6g). The good condition of the iron loop might make a date later in the given range more likely. It is also poss…

A lead disc, possibly a weight of uncertain date Medieval to post medieval date, AD 1280 - 1900. The disc is sub-circular and worn. There is a slight raised rim on one face, and a faint bump in the centre. The other face tends towards concave. Measurements are; diameter 20.2mm, thickness 3.9mm and weight 11.89g. It is probably intended as a half ounce weight, now worn to slightly under the expected mass of about 14g.
