A complete lead alloy weight, dating from an unknown period.
The weight is 'barrel-shaped', and has an uneven aperture throughout its interior. There is a brown-grey patina on the surface. It is possible that this weight is early medieval in date as a quantity of material dating to this period has been found in the vicinity. However, Watling (2009, 249) notes that similar weights, probably used to nets used for fishing and bird netting, have been found on sites ranging from the Iron Age to medieval periods. The examples illustrated by Watling (ibid) have been rolled to form a …

A cast lead alloy weight of late medieval to post medieval date (c. AD 1300 - 1700).
The weight is an irregular regular hexagonal shape in plan and trapazoidal in cross section (widening towards it base). The weight is a light grey sometimes creamy off white colour.
The weight is 20mm long, 17.2mm wide, 10.4mm and weighs 32.77 grams.
Several hexagonal merchant weights are recorded on this database, cf YORYM-D21FA8, NLM-8B49B9 without a central perforation. It is possible this is a repurposed casting from such a mould.
