Record ID: GAT-10FD65
Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Gwynedd

A lead weight.
The weight is circular in form and engraved with ‘IIII’ on one face. The reverse has a single linear line running across the face but is otherwise plain.
It has been suggested that leads weights incised with a form of number may represent the weight of the weight in ounces. If this example was meant to be four ounces, it is underweight at 3.6 ounces.
Illegal lead weights are notoriously difficult to date as they bear no official mark.

A lead weight in a conical or bell shape.
The weight has a white patina, and its surface is lightly pitted on the sides and deeply pitted on its bottom.
At its apex the metal is curved to the side and there is a divot where there may have once been a perforation so the weight could have been suspended, although the flat bottom to the weight indicates that it would have been freestanding.

A lead disc weight.
The weight is circular form and includes a central circular perforation.
The circular perforation may have been used to suspend the weight, but it could also have been used as a means of transporting the weight (for example, hung on a belt). Lead weights in general are difficult to date as they have remained relatively unchanged from the Roman to post medieval period.
