A cast alloy artefact, probably a weight of early post-Medieval period. It is sub-conical in form, with a domed apex and concave sides, meaning it could be described as 'bell shaped'. The base is flat with a slot across the base. One side is marked 1/4 on the opposite side is a circular cast mark. The base slot dimensions are as follows:  Width 3.76mm, depth 4.15mm, length 14.07mm. General dimensions: Height: 19.38mm Base diameter: 14.07mm Peak/point diameter: 7.52mm Weight: 7.76g

A complete lead-alloy trade weight. The weight is disc shape with a raised rim that is bevelled on the inside. The surface is slightly concave and has a series of finely turned concentric grooves. There are two stamp marks to the face, but they are hard to make out. One looks to be the remnants of a portcullis, and the other the remnants of a monarch's insignia. The entire object has a relatively smooth white-grey patina. From its appearance and markings compared with other contemporary trade weights, it seems likely that it is a Georgian trade weight, but to the exact reign,…

A complete copper alloy trade weight issued in the reign Queen Anne (1702-1707). The weight is disc shape with a raised rim that is bevelled on the inside. The surface is slightly concave and has a series of finely turned concentric grooves. There are three stamp marks on this face: a sword at 1 o’clock, representing the sword of St. Paul for the City of London, a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights) at 6 o’clock, and a crowned ‘A’ (royal cypher) at 9 o’clock, probably for Anne. The reverse face is flat. The entire object …

A complete lead alloy probable steelyard weight probably of Medieval to Post-Medieval date c. 1200-1750. It is oval or egg-shaped, tapering to the apex, and sub-circular in plan. It has a circular aperture 2.84mm in diameter running through the centre of the object from its apex to its base. There is a large incision towards the base of the weight, perhaps from damage. The weight is a mid grey white colour. Measurements: height 74.23mm, diameter 57.06mm, weight 1239g. Several ovoid or egg shaped weights have been recorded on the database; many with…

A discoid lead object, possibly a weight of medieval to post medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1900. It is a sub-circular flat discoid weight with one flat and smooth face, and one with a slight bulge in the centre. It is 16.96mm thick. The weight is unmarked apart from a few lines scratched into it. It has a mid grey patina. The weight is 57.84mm in diameter and weighs 426g. The mass does not obviously fit into any standard system of weight measurement, so it is perhaps a weight designed to add mass rather than to measure it.

A complete cast lead alloy weight of probable Medieval to Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1200-1800). It is roughly trapezoidal in plan. There is a suspension loop with a circular perforation at the apex. The weight is patinated light creamy white in colour with worn, pitted surface. The pitted, more recessed areas are patinated orange-brown in colour. In addition to pitting there are also one fairly deep linear groove on one wide face which is most likely caused by damage to the object while in use or possibly by agricultural equipment after deposition.&n…

Three complete copper-alloy stacking trade weights of probable Post-medieval date (c. AD 1625-1685). 1. The largest weight is discoidal and unifaced with a raised rim. The sides are slightly tapered. The front face features incised concentric cicular grooves (one approximately 7.19mm from the inside edge of the rim and the next approximately 1mm in from this). At the centre is a circular punch mark to aid in centring the weight. The upper face is stamped with 4 verification marks: Between 10 and 11 o'clock - a crowned letter C, for Charles I or II (AD 1625-1649 o…

A possibly incomplete lead weight or gaming piece of uncertain date, probably dating from the Roman to Post-medieval period (c. AD 43-1600). The weight is broadly conical in shape and varies from sub-circular to sub-square in cross-section, tapering out towards the base. The form of the object is now fairly distorted. The distortion makes it difficult to determine but the weight appears to be centrally perforated from apex to base. It is patinated light grey-brown. Measurements: Height, 41.95mm; Diameter (Maximum), 18.65mm; Diameter (Minimum), 13.83mm; Thickness (wall…
