Possible weight, of sub-square plan with radiused corners, it appears that the straight sides have been hammered as the edges expand, an off-centre, sub rectangular perforation has been punched through the weight, four deeply punched flower/sun motifs decorate one face, each stamp has a central, circular element with eleven radiating “petals” or “rays”. Possibly an unofficial ¼ oz weight, maybe the stamps are an attempt to legitimise/make official its use, denote a certain unit(s) of weight, or are simply decorative. Medieval to Post Medieval, 1066-1900 AD.

A complete lead-alloy weight dating from the Roman to Post Medieval period (43-1800 AD). In plan the weight is broadly trapezoidal with concave top and bottom to the weight, the sides are incised with two lines following the outer (long) edges, the outer parts obscured, rectangular in section, two holes are included in the cast, probably to facilitate suspension, one at each end. Weight equates to 7 3/4 ounces, probably intended as an 8 oz weight. Cf. WREX-F979D1 for a broadly similar but lighter example.

A lead weight of probable Roman date (c.AD 43-410). The weight is circular in plan and rectangular in section. Its face is inscribed with the Roman numerals 'IIII', the reverse is undecorated. A similar example can be found on p16 Biggs and Withers (2000). It is worth noting that while this style of weight was introduced in the Roman period it was also used well into the modern period making the Roman date uncertain.  Dimensions: Diameter 44.4mm, Thickness 7.3mm, Weight 110.00g

Lead weight of uncertain but probably medieval or post-medieval date. It has two flat and perfectly circular opposing faces, one larger than the other, and a straight-sloping edge between them. It is trapezoidal in cross-section. The larger face is decorated with eight straight lines radiating from the centre to the edge, each composed of multiple opposing pairs of short oblique incised grooves: the effect is like a fern or a fishbone, but without a spine. The radiating lines are not equally spaced and it seems that the intention might have been to place them in four pairs. However, th…

Post-medieval lead pendent weight. It is lentoid when viewed from the front or rear and plano-convex in cross-section. There is a crude (untidy) sub-oval perforation at the upper apex for suspension. The front (convex) face is decorated with three concentric lentoid grooves. A series of sub-oval impressions line the perimeter, except at the apices where they may be lost to wear or distortion. The reverse is undecorated. This weight was perhaps used as a sinker for a net or as a plumb bob. Somewhat similar examples on this database include NMS-562714, NMGW-B191F1 and LVPL…

Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy pendant weight. The body of the weight is an elongated ovoid shape and is cast in-the-round with a suspension loop uppermost. The loop has been struck on one side and is now distorted. The convex moulded body has grooves to either side that follow the curving shape of the sides in the centre of which the profile rises to form a medial arris. There is a transverse groove around the base of the weight that acts as a stopping point for the contoured decoration. These types of weight are poorly understood. There are many with the sa…

Post-medieval lead discoidal half-ounce Avoirdupois weight with, punched on one face, the letter A for Avoirdupois (inverted), an arc-shaped impression, and a five-towered castle above a lion passant, a variation of the arms of Norwich, cf. NMS-77E717 (which was dated 1625-49). Weight 13.39g / 0.472oz. Diameter 22 – 24.5mm. Thickness 3.3mm. 17th century.

A Post Medieval lead trade weight of Charles I (1625-1649) and the City of Norwich. The weight is discoidal and features two stamped impressions: a crowned 'CR' and a castle of two towers, a gate and a crenulated battlement - the arms of Norwich. Above the staps are four circular recessions. Light grey patination and heavily worn. The trade weight measures 46.6mm diameter, 7.4mm thickness and weighs 103.45 grams.

A complete lead standing weight of uncertain date. The weight is roughly pyramidal in shape, becoming slightly wider towards the flat base. There is a small integral suspension loop at the apex. The base has two small triangular indentations in its centre. The surface of the metal is corroded. Because of the undiagnostic (and often home made) nature of weights like this one, only a broad Roman to post-medieval date range can be suggested. Length: 25.59mm, width of base: 16.43mm, thickness of base: 14.09mm, weight: 29.39g

Post-medieval discoidal unofficial lead trade weight in quite fresh condition, with various punched impressions on one face: one circular with serrations around the circumference and containing the letters CR; three narrow and elongated made with the same implement and lying in parallel; one sub-circular and possibly made with several tools, with triplets of small round marks surrounding probably three rectangles; three much more shallowly struck and all different, with closely spaced grooves or dashes.
