A lead cone, probably a standing weight of either Medieval or Post Medieval date, AD 1350 - 1800. It is a solid circular cone of lead, with no decoration or markings. There is no suspension loop. Measurements are; height 49.8mm, diameter at the base 38.6mm and weight 249g. The mass is close to two thrids of a pound, or 1 mark, in the English Troy system of weight measurement (Egan, 1998, page 302). It may also be a weight to add mass rather than for measurement.

A lead rectangular object, probably a weight dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval period, AD 1400 - 1700. It is rectangular in plan and uniface with two interconnecting and overlapping V's forming the letter W cast in relief at one end. There is also a cast raised border round the edge of the domino-like plaque. The object is 41.9mm long, 25.5mm wide and thickness is 5.7mm. The reverse is plain. The weight has a mass of 45.1g, which is close to 1/8 lb in the English troy system (46.6g) and 1/8lb in the Tower system (43.7g). It …

A lead trade weight, probably Medieval in date, AD 1200 - 1600. It is shield shaped and has a design of a double lis in relief. With a mass of 151.21g, it may represent a half pound in the Tower or English Troy systems of measurement. It should be noted that this mass is a little below that expected which may be due to wear and tear. The weight has a light grey patina and is bent across the middle.  Measurements are; length 60.7mm, width 41.7mm thickness 7.1mm and weight 151.21g.  Compare page 41 of Lead Weights by Biggs and Withers (2000), and SWYOR-866…

A medieval or post medieval cast lead perforated suspension weight, probably dating from AD 1200 - 1900. It is a solid rectangular based pyramid in shape with an integral suspension loop at the top. Three of the  four faces are slightly recessed. The weight has a pale grey patina. The weight is 54.0mm long, 33.7mm wide and 32.6mm thick. It weighs 336.0g. The mass is similar to 12oz (3/4 lb) in the mercantile or Avoirdupois sytems, but may also be intended as a Tower pound (349.9g) (Egan, 1998, p. 302) but it could also be a weight not used for measureing, such as a a co…

A lead trade weight, probably Medieval in date, AD 1200 - 1600. It is heart shaped (basically a shield shape with a notch in the centre of the upper edge) and has a design in relief of three lions poassant guardant facing right. There is a small hole through the upper right corner, just behind the head of the lion. With a mass of 203g, it was probably intended as a half pound (8oz) weight. Measurements are; length 62.9mm, width 42.1mm thickness 10.8mm and weight 203g.  Most weights of this design have the three lions facing left (as on WMID-C4D71E for example), so it is…

A cast lead probable weight of oval form dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval period, about AD 1100-1800. There is a central oval aperture, probably for suspension, and it is suggested that the object is probably a line or net weight. The object, which has a creamy patina, has a length of 28.46mm, and width of 25.11mm and a thickness of 10.47mm. It weighs 42.54g, which does not suggest a value in any standard system of weight measurement, indicating that this weight was to add mass rather than to measure it.. The central aperture has length of 9.45 and a width of 6.14mm. A possib…

A domed and perforated lead weight of Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1800. It was probably intended to be a 1/8th of a pound, or two ounce (2oz) weight. It has a circular indentation on the flat base, perhaps from the cooling of the lead. The top is domed. The hole is not through the centre of the base, though it appears at the apex. This makes it unlikely to be a spindle whorl. Diameter 25.8mm, height 16.5mm, weight 52.20gm. The central hole is circular and is 3.6mm diameter at the apex and 5.7mm at base.

A complete hexagonal cast lead standing weight of medieval to post-medieval date (about AD1350-1800). It is of truncated piriform shape with a projecting knop or handle at its apex, which has a transverse pierced hole. The weight has an unmarked concave base. At 178.4g it may be comparable with half a Troy pound, which would date it from the mid-fourteenth century onwards (see Egan, 1998, p.302). The weight has a height of 34.3mm and a diameter of 32.3mm. As highlighted above, it weighs 178.4g. See Biggs and Withers (2000), pp. 32-33, for similar (although not hexagonal) examples.

A lead alloy probable weight of possible Early Medieval date, about AD 850 - 1050. It is a cast plano-convex or domed weight with a central aperture in the flat face of 11.2mm diameter. This hollow was probably not intended to perforate the domed face of the weight, but is now corrded through in a smaller, irregular hole. The outer face of the domed side is particularly pitted and corroded. NLM-9E5801 and similar records suggests that a mass of 20.22g equates to five Viking age Scandinavian units for the weighing of bullion (4.07gms). This example has lost some material and has a mass…
