A lead alloy weight. It is shaped like an elongated sphere. The neck is long and flat, sub rectangular in shape. In the centre, near the tip is a suspension hole. The base is flat in the centre and would therefore stand. Weights like these are seen in the Roman (for example SUSS-EA2CCC) and Medieval (NLM-5D1F37) periods. The weight of 192g does not accord with the Roman weight system, as 1 semis is equivalent to 164.5g. It is closer to the Troy system, where 1/2 lb would be 186.5g, this was probably in use from the late 14th century, only being s…

Late Medieval to early Post Medieval lead alloy shield shaped pan weight. Equates to 60 drams or 3.7 ounces (almost 4 ounces or quarter a pound) under the ‘binary’ averdepois system. The weight is lightly abraded and the decoration is still clearly visible. Dates to between c1390 and c1588 AD. Length 48mm, width 37mm, thickness 11mm, weight 105.35g. The weight illustrated on p4…

A probable Medieval or post medieval cast lead alloy cup weight from a set of nested weights. While usually found in copper alloy the form and decoration of this example is so similar to those examples nested that it is likely to have had a similar function and date - c. AD 1300-1600 (see Egan 1998:309-10 and Biddle (1990) 921-2, nos. 3197-9). The weight is open in profile, having a circular base with the sides flaring out to a wider rim. The base is convex inside, but flat outside. The rim surface itself is decorated with a motif of ring and dot …

A lead alloy weight in the shape of a cone with a rounded top. Out of the top of this is an iron bar of circular section, with a wider diameter piece on the end of this, to facilitate the fixing of a suspension string. It weighs 263g which is just under 10 imperial ounces, or 5/8 of a pound, which it may have represented when new before any loss occurred. Dimensions: 32mm diameter at the bottom and 14mm diameter at the top, it is 46mm high and weighs 263g

Post Medieval lead alloy dome shaped probable weight. It has been cast in a mould made by the first joint of someone's thumb, the imprint of the nail still being visible. Possibly an incomplete suspended weight that was originally intended to have some form of trapped loop in the cavity in the base. Alternatively it may always have been intended as a standing weight, possibly for a balance scale pan, or just someone having a bit of fun. Probably dates to between c1100 and c1750 AD. The height is 21mm, width is 21mm, thickness 17mm, and the weight 44.71g.
