A cast lead artefact, probably a perforated weight, perhaps for a line or net, of Medieval or post-Medieval date, about AD 1100 - 1800. It is 37.6mm long 14.1mm wide and 7.6mm thick. It weighs 35.55g. It is in the form of a rectangle in plan, with a pointed end. It is rectangular in cross-section and has flat faces. There is a sub-circular sub-conical perforation in the pointed end. There are some grooves in the sides; nicks across the corners, probably the result of damage post-deposition in the soil. It has a cream patina. The mass is not obviously a weight in any of the common syste…

A lead alloy shield shaped trade weight dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1250 - 1500. Both faces of the weight are damaged, so it is not possible to tell if there was once a design. With a mass of 90.34g this was probably intended to be an 1/4 lb weight in the mercantile or Avoirdupois systems based on 15 ounces of 29.2g or 28.4g in the pound respectively (109.4g or 106.3g "correct" mass), but damage and wear has resulted in the loss of some mass. There are details of these systems in table 14 on page 302 of Egan's The Medieval Household (2010). The weight has a grey patina wi…

Weights of this style are frequently encount…

A complete lead weight of Medieval or Post Medieval date (c. AD 1400-1800). The weight consists of a plano-convex circular form with slightly inward sloping sides resulting in a recession of the top face. This top face appears worn, pitted and undecorated. The bottom, base face displays a number of shallow incised lines, two of which appear to dominate and form a cross shape. The metal has a light brown patina and is smoothed worn in several places. The weight is 30.5mm in diameter, 7.2mm thick and weighs 49g. Similar objects on the database are: BH-864909 and HESH-B822DC.

A Medieval lead pendent weight dating from AD 1200 - 1500. It is an elongated lentoid in shape with a perforation for suspension at the flattened and rounded apex. In cross-section it is D shaped, and slightly hollow on the flat reverse in places. A similar example is NMS-A7E0B0. Compare also Egan (1998), 310-11, fig.231 which is recorded as a type commonly seen, but of uncertain function, perhaps as a sinker for a net, as a plumb bob or for use with a ship's soundling lead. Length: 80.2 mm Width: 13.6 mm Thickness: 9 mm Weight: 50.4 g

A shield shaped, cast lead trade weight dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1350 - 1500. The upper face is decorated with in a raised border and the faint design of a crown over a fleur. It is 72.7mm long, 50.7mm wide and 20mm thick. It weighs 209g. It was probably intended to be an 8oz weight, but has lost some mass. There is an iron rivet through the weight, perhaps to adjust the mass. Compare SWYOR-7A7972 for the general style. The weight is bent and has some damage. Similar weights are discussed and illustrated in Biggs and Withers, 2000, Lead Weights: The David Rogers Colle…

A cast lead weight probably dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, about AD 1100-1800. The object is of rounded sub-triangular form and has a height of 22.19mm, a width of 14.95mm, and a thickness of 9.92mm. It weighs 14.86g. There is an elongated oval perforation for suspension. There are grooves in either side of this perforation (towards the apex of the triangle) where the line from which the weight was suspended has worn into the lead. Although its mass is only a little over half an ounce, the object is probable a line or net weight, not one intended for measurement.
