A lead alloy probable weight. The object is conical, and has a hole running vertically through the centre. There are several old dents on the side and base, and a recent scrape. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. This one weighs 98.2g, which is not far off three ounces. The hole through this example casts some doubt on its function as a standing weight, yet the hole seems too narrow to allow use as a spindle…

A short, bi-conical perforated lead weight, with a flat top and base. The hole which runs through the centre of the weight has a circular section. These weighs are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been spindle whorls dating from the medieval period or later, but due to a lack of excavated examples and lack of context this weight must remain undated. The weight is decorated with lines that radiate out from the centre. The weight is complete. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour.

Helen Geake writes: “It is very difficult to establish hard and fast rules with lead weights, as we have little material from excavated contexts to compare. The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle whorls to fishing weights to trade weights.” Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. Undated lead object, 42mm long and 38mm in diameter. The object is in fair condition with a grey patina and weighs 378grams. The object consists of two slightly flattened spheres which are joind by a short circular sectioned shaft. The spheres are slightly mis-aligned so the gap is larger on one side, this may be a deliberate functional attribute. The object is reminiscent of a pulley, but it is most probably a weight of some sort.

A complete lead or lead alloy weight, of probable Late Medieval to Post Medieval dating (AD 1300 to AD 1800). The weight is cylindrial in plan, and sub circular in cross section. One end has been squashed together. The central hole has an internal diameter of 8.1 mm. Corrosion products and soil are still present inside the central perforation. It is a light to mid grey colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, probably caused by movement in the plough soil, has resulted in the loss of a significant proportion of the original surface. It measures 42.6 mm long, has a diame…

A cast lead weight of possible Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is rectangular in plan, trapezoidal in section and with faceted exterior edges on the top surface. Both front and back faces appear to be undecorated and the casting is crudly done. It measures 39.6mm in length, 34.4mm in width, 15.1mm in thickness, and weighs 167.8 grams. The lack of defined decorative motifs renders the dating of this object uncertain, although associated finds might indicate a Medeival to Post-Medieval periods.

Cast lead weight, oval in profile and circular in plan with a circular hole running most of the way through the lengh but blocked at the end. It probably held a rod with the weight acting as some type of counterweight. The surface is uneven. It is 32.2mm in diameter, 45.2mm tall and weighs 193 grams. The hole is 9.4mm in diameter. Cast lead weights were often made at home or locally for a wide range of uses, they are therefore hard to date precisely but most are Roman, Medieval or Post Medieval in date.

Cast lead disk shaped weight. The weight is sub-circular as a piece has been cut from one side. Several incised lines running across one side near this cut may suggest it was deliberate. The top and bottom are plain apart form the incised lines and multiple, irregularly spaced, stamped annulets. The sides are rounded. It is 34.3mm long, 28.2mm wide and 5.5mm thick, it weighs 34.58 grams. Simple weights like this were often made locally for a wide range of purposes and are hard to date precisely, they can be Roman - Modern in date.

Lead weight. Cast bun-shaped weight, patinated overall. The mass might qualify this as representing ten underweight Viking-Age units of 4.43gms, as used for the weighing of silver bullion. However, it is also common for medieval shield-shaped weights from London. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Medieval, 850-1350. Diameter: 24.5mm, Height: 10.9mm, Weight: 46.93gms.
