Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an uneven surface with off-centre dimple and a flat base; perhaps cast in an open mould suggesting the flat side to have been uppermost at the time of fabrication. Opposed pairs of nicks appear on the flat side. The metal retains a grey tint suggesting its relatively recent date. Though a weight close to this mass was reported from the London waterfront (Egan 1998, table 15) though it was not thought to respect any prevailing standard. This object might alternatively represent one and a half averdepois ounces, perhaps as a homemade weight for the k…

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an uneven upper surface on which appear straight lines moulded in bold relief. The lines may represent two separate arrowhead forms or perhaps an untidy monogram including letter forms resembling M and V. On the base – or the top as cast in an open mould - there is a central dimple with a crudely incised triangle around it. Patinated. The combination of relief features, dimple and incised base recur in medieval London (e.g. Egan 1998 fig. 233 no. 993, see also no. 990) where they may respect a medieval standard (ibid. table 15), and were poss…

An incomplete cast lead and iron Roman steelyard weight dating to c.AD 43-410. A bi-convex lead weight with evidence of iron at one terminal. Originally an iron rod would have passed through it and the uppermost would have housed a separate iron loop. Patinated.  Height: 37.98 mm, Width (waist): 22.99 mm, Weight: 72.32g

A post medieval lead weight, dating to c. AD 1600 - 1900. In plan the weight is a tapering rectangle and in profile is wedge shaped. The base is flat. At the flat top there is a loop made of copper alloy wire which appears to extend internally to the base as some of the wire is exposed at one of the base corners. There are no markings on the weight body. It weighs 83.78 grams which is equivelant to being just under three ounces. Height 47 mm, width 22 mm, thickness 17 mm and weight 83.78 g.

Lead possible weight. Cast heater-shield-shaped plate with an indistinct symmetrical motif on its display side, possibly a lis or a crowned motif; patinated. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a pilgrim badge. The quasi-heraldic form, and perhaps the charge as well were it clearer, might both associate this with the 14th-century English vogue for heraldic motifs, which might be worn or carried by those with no noble connection or pretension. There is no apparent means of attachment. The mass equates to about one half of an averdepois ounce, thus respecting a system introdu…

Lead possible weight. Cast oval plano-convex object, pierced with a possibly drilled hole on the site of a short cut at its edge, and with a broad cut across its flat surface; patinated. This might have been cast from scrap as a tiny ingot as the underside is rough and perhaps sanded but the hole suggests it was then put to some suspended use. Improvised use – perhaps for only a single operation – as a palm guard might equally be entertained. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 41.5mm, Width: 33.8mm, Thickness: 10.1mm, Weight: 58.57gms

Lead weight. A small cast sub-cylindrical lead weight with a step at its mid-point and a tapered round-topped and drilled loop above the step at its top. The form and provision for suspension might point to use as a steelyard poise – a steelyard weight was reported along with this object – though a flat base would also permit use as a standing or scale pan weight. Patinated. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 15.7mm, Height: 27mm, Weight: 31.96gms

A probably lead weight probably dating from the Post-medieval period, about AD 1500 - 1900. The weight is cylindrical with an irregular base that might have been flat barring a casting error and slightly domed top. It has almost fluted sides created by vertically inside lines running up its sides so that it is almost hexagonal rather than circular. It carries no further marks marks and does not have a weight matching any regular weight system. It is a creamy off white colour. The weight is 12.3mm high, 13.7mm in diameter and weighs 13.14 grams …

Copper alloy weight. Viking weight in the shape of a cube with cut-off ends. Six dots stamped onto large surfaces, only one on smaller ones. Trace of silvering/tinnning. The mass may suggest this to represent one [underweight] unit of 4.07gms, as thought to have been favoured in areas under Danish influence. Lead weight, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast rectangular plate with three bevelled edges and one cut edge, the latter being on one of the shorter sides. Five holes appear to have been pierced with the end of a handmade iron nail from the upper side where the bevel lies. The texture on the flat underside may suggest casting in a sand bed or a sanded mould, details of manufacture which might be expected in a professional episode of lead casting. Patinated. The mass might suggest this was intended to represent four [overweight] averdepois ounces and several round lead weights of a…

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with a slightly lipped rim on its upper side and a central tapered piercing of width 2.9-2mm made from the underside. Patinated. The same mass is noted for a round weight from medieval London (Egan 1998, table 15) though the form and condition might be apt to an earlier date. Lead weight. Small cast sub-conical weight with a longitudinal possibly pierced aperture of 5-3.5mm width. Three tiny sharp flanges project from the base and appear alongside what appears as tiny slits. Patinated overall. The finder kindly suggests a function as a line weight, which appears apt. These are usually ascribed to the medieval period, but a pot mend from the same site bears exactly the same surface patina and was ascribed to the Roman period. Lead possible weight fragment. A cast triangular block, flat-sided and with one flat regular edge; the other two longer sides appear uneven as if a fragment had been roughly hacked from a larger object which was originally carefully cast in a finely sanded mould whose imprint may appear on the base [as cast]; one broken side coincides with a long hollow casting flaw. Patinated. Objects of about this mass occur among weights from medieval London, though neither frequently nor of this form (Egan 1998, Table 15, Fig. 229).
