Medieval-Post Medieval copper alloy fragment of a cooking vessel, probably from a cauldron, c.1200-1600. The fragment has black specs on both the obverse and reverse sides which may be a result of sooting or possibly part of the patina. The obverse side of the fragment has very faint lateral lines running across it. This side is also straighter than the reverse side which slopes up towards the rim. The reverse side also has a smooth patina but has a green/white residue on it, which is also present on the obverse. The reverse also has been scratched, one appearing to be a cross sh…

An incomplete Medieval to Late Post Medieval (1200-1800) copper alloy leg from a cooking vessel, triangular in cross-section with a central vertical rib and missing both the upper and lower (foot) part of the leg. It measures 60.66mm in incomplete length and weighs 115.85g. At the wider end, the break is somewhat smoother (and possibly older), and has probably occurred across an air bubble in the molten metal (now visible as a hole). This section measures 36.33x10.82mm (rectangular section across hole) or 17.13mm thick just behind. The narrower end measures 28.45x9.68mm and the bre…

An incomplete Medieval to Late Post Medieval (1200-1800) copper alloy leg from a cooking vessel, trapezoidal in cross-section at the break and with a curious ?lead projection at the centre of the reverse. It consists of the foot and lower part of the leg only. Measures 44.38mm in incomplete length and weighs 114.92g. At the break the leg measures 33.41x15.34mm. The toes are possibly also damaged and are rather thin (39.19x1.67mm), being hollow underneath and with an inverted V shape gap at the base of the foot. It is from here the D-shaped lead projection extends horizontally. One …

A rim fragment of Medieval/ Post-Medieval (1200-1800) copper alloy cooking vessel, measuring 61.58x33.71x8.36mm and weighing 39.8g. The rim is diamond-shaped in cross-section. Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from c.1200-1800 for serving and cooking. Butler and Green (2003; 15) state 'there is evidence that (cast copper alloy) metal cooking vessels became increasingly common during the 13th and 14th centuries'. While certain specialist cast copper alloy vessels such as skillets remained in use later 'bronze cauldrons in general seem to have been superseded in …

An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval/ Post-Medieval (1200-1800) vessel leg from a ewer or skillet. The top of the leg is missing and the entire object has suffered for partial melting. The surviving leg measures 75.44mm in length, 30.73mm in max.width and 20.41mm in max.thickness. It weighs 114.53g. The leg is triangular in section at the base of foot, although the melting obscures this further up the leg. A fragment of the vessel itself may also survive at the top of the leg. The foot (which is the widest part) has five vertical toe-ribs to create a claw/ paw, above which is a …

A rim fragment of Medieval/ Post-Medieval (1200-1800) copper alloy vessel, measuring 98.02x87.37x0.53mm and weighing 22.4g. A (now incomplete) repair patch has been rivetted over the vessel, 2 rivets of which survive. The rivets are rectangular in form and sheet metal (apparently the same metal as the vessel and repair patch), folded concertina-style with narrow pointed ends that bend backwards to secure themselves. Constructions of this form were typically used to repair damaged copper-alloy vessels.
