An incomplete, 1st Century AD, griffin-headed terminal from a fixed vessel handle. The original vessel would have had a mirror image terminal on the opposite side, joined by an omega-shaped handle. Only the stub of the handle survives on this example and the head of the griffin is also missing. The front face of the terminal is decorated with punched crecents possibly representing the feathers on the neck of the creature. The rear face of the terminal is slightly concave in both horizontal and vertical axes to ensure a close fit to the wall of a large vessel. The…

A fragment of a large leg and foot from a cast, copper-alloy cauldron or other large cooking pot. The vessel leg has a flared foot that turns to angle upwards to form the leg, which has an integrally cast raised rib running down the outside centre. There are carbonised deposits on all surfaces. This type of vessel leg is known to have been used on vessels dating from the later medieval period although copper-alloy cooking vessels were in use well into the post-medieval period. This vessel leg probably dates from the late 15th to 17th century.

The lower portion of a leg from a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel. The leg base is sub-triangular and the upper edge is sub-oval in cross section. The outer face of the leg has a prominent vertical ridge which is triangular in section and tapers towards the base. There is evidence of sooting. Due to its size,it is probably from a cauldron. These are problematic to date closely when found out of contex as they were used over a long time span; however, it almost certainly dates from the Late Medieval to post-Medieval periods. See WAW 12EF35 for a similar example.

A foot from a cast, copper-alloy cauldron or other large cooking pot. The vessel leg has a flared foot that turns to angle upwards to form the leg. There is an integrally cast raised rib running down the outside centre of the foot. This type of vessel leg is known to have been used on vessels dating from the later medieval period although copper-alloy cooking vessels were in use well into the post-medieval period. This vessel leg probably dates from the late 15th to 17th century.

A complete cast copper alloy leg from a vessel, probably a cauldron of later medieval date (1300 - 1600). It is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with a flared top where it joined onto the bowl. In cross section the leg is a D shape with a pronounced curved front face. The foot is hooved, with four indentations. The top has a wide flange about 5mm below the top that the bowl sat upon, and a higher central section that went through the bowl's side and was hammered down to sandwich the bowl between itself and the lower flange. A fragment of bowl remains trapped in this gap, it is coppe…

A cast copper alloy pot leg and foot. The leg is D shaped in section with a flat back and convex curved front with a slight angle at the front. It narrows and thins slightly from the attachment end to the foot. The foot projects out at 80 degrees and has a slightly concave base and rounded toe. It is 57.07mm tall, 18.23mm wide and 10.85mm thick; it weighs 33.4 grams. The size and fine shaping suggests this may have come from a serving vessel or one used for serving and cooking such as a skillet rather than a cauldron.
