A flint scraper, probably a thumb nail scraper of the Beaker period, about 2400 BC - 2200 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of dark grey flint, partially patinated to a light grey on the ventral face. It is oval, longer than it is wide, and is invasively worked. All the edges have invasive, abrupt, scaled retouch leaving only the centre of the dorsal face as a concave previous removal scar. It is 30.1mm long, 22.8mm wide and 9.7mm thick. 7.6g.

A complete flint Thumbnail Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface is concave with short, scaled flaking along the proximal edge. The proximal edge has been abruptly blunted. All other edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is slightly convex due to a bulb of percussion situated at the proximal end. There are shallow ripples of percussion emanating from the proximal end. The lithic retain no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake. The flint i…

A complete flint Thumbnail Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and bi-convex in section. The dorsal surface retains covering cortex with the exaction of short parallel flaking along the distal edge. There is semi-abrupt retouch to the distal edge. The ventral surface is slightly convex with three predominant negative scars. The lithic retains a large amount of cortex and is therefore a primary flake. The flint is brown in colour, the cortex is light brown. Length: 39.72mm, Width: 33.77mm, Thickness: 15.73mm, Weight: 24.1g

A crudely flaked thumb nail scraper made on a tertiary flake of grey flint with a thick white patina. The scraper retains the remnant of a wide striking platform and low bulb of percussion at the proximal end. There is a remnant of flake removal scars on the dorsal face. There is large, abrupt, parallel retouch round the 75 % of curved outer edge, which has been struck from the ventral face. Five (5) thumbnail scrapers of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scrapers vary in colour from mid grey to pale brown. All are formed on D shaped flakes with high D shaped cross sections. Many of the scrapers dorsal faces have several broad removals / flake facets most probably caused by other flakes being removed for tool production. Several of the upper dorsal faces have retouch best described as long and covering pressure flaking. Around the exterior edges of all the scrapers are areas of dense neat regular well applied secondary retouch . This has been we…

Two burnt later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2500 - 1500 BC) thumbnail scrapers formed on mid grey flakes of tertiary flint. The flake are broad and squat - originally being oval in plan but they are now both D shaped; in cross section they are broadly sub-rectangular. The flint flakes are well preserved - evidence for retouch or secondary working can be seen along the curved external edges of both the flakes. This retouch is short, sub-parallel and abrupt in nature. The retouch is well applied and controlled suggesting skill and competence. Both these scrapers have been burnt …

A thumbnail scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is formed on a fine, mid brown (toffee like) coloured good quality, tertiary oval shaped flake of flint. The ventral face shows the bulb and point of percussion as well as conchoidal ripples and bulbar scar; this shows that the flake was struck from a prepared striking platform. The dorsal face has several broad removals / flake facets most probably caused by other flakes being removed for tool production. Around the edges are areas of dense neat regular well applied secondary retouch . This ha…
