A post-Medieval clothing tag, probably made of lead-alloy. It references a Mens and Boys outfitters, located on Boscawen Street, Truro. Boscawen Street was built as a shopping street in 1794. This object would greatly benefit from fruther research, such as on the socio-economic history of 19th-century Truro. On the obverse, we can see 'Mens and Boys outfitters', with 'Boscawen Street' listed underneath it, and 'Truro' listed underneath that. Unfortunately the name of the shop itself is missing, but it would have appeared above 'Mens and Boys outfi…

An incomplete Post Medieval cast copper alloy hand-shaped tag from a surveyor's chain, c.AD 1620-1900. The object is flat and consists of a loop at the top, now open, by which it would have been attached to a chain. Below this is the neck, which flares out into a semi-circle with four finger-shaped projections at the opposite end to the loop, all in the same plane. The comb is undecorated on both sides, with an even colour and a slightly gritty feel to the surface. Objects such as this are from what is known as a Gunter's chain which was originally used for land surveying. Di…

An incomplete Modern lead alloy tag, c.AD 1900-1920. Kindly identified by Paul Cannon. This is a damaged lead seal, with old breaks around the edges and wear on both faces. Both sides have the remains of what looks to have been a continuous raised circle border. Both faces have been damaged by wear and possible rust stains, which suggest it was attached with wire. Most likely to have a post 1906 (Federal Meat Inspection Act) date. Obverse: Intwined US. Reverse: MEA[T] // [INSP]EC[TOR]

A post medieval object of uncertain function, possibly a tag or label. The object comprises a copper alloy disc of 13.5mm diameter which on one side displays a crown and, on the other, a cypher of CR. The disc is held at the end of a rectangular piece of rusted iron 19.7mm in length, perhaps an attachment fitting. The cypher suggests a potential attribution to the reigns of Charles I or II and a 17th century date.

Probable post-medieval lead tag or seal decorated with a simple depiction of a human face. It is circular, almost disc-shaped, with a low circular central dome on the front and a less circular and less central but more pronounced bulge on the reverse. Two opposing fragments of the flatter perimeter are missing (above and below the face), perhaps to worn breaks, or perhaps the gaps are intentional to facilitate passing a cord through them. The domed central part of the front bears two pellets for eyes, a triangle for a nose and a short horizontal rectangle for a mouth, all in reli…

The strips are bent around to form a ring. The oval plate has the number 1807 stamped into it, which is more likely a livestock number instead of a date. The object is lightly corroded.

A lead bag tag / seal. The seal is circular in shape with a small sub rectangular tag protruding from one side. The reverse of the seal has a protruding sub circular central projection, which would have originally formed the second half of the bag seal. The obverse is plain apart from the letters ā€˜Fā€™ and ā€˜Lā€™. This type of seal is a two-part type which would have originally consisted of two rounded discs of lead connected by a strip of the same metal.
