An incomplete copper-alloy Medieval three-piece composite strap-end with forked spacer. This strap-end has a circular body with flaring upper half. The forked spacer terminates below with an acorn shaped knop. The artefact, in its current condition, weighs 11.73g, has a length of 54.8mm, maximum width of 20.2mm and thickness of 3.9mm. The thickness increases over the acorn terminal to a maximum 4.7mm (the top of the acorn's cup). The three-dimensional acorn terminal accounts for 8.1mm of the object's total length. The cup has a width of 4.4mm at the base, adjacent to the rest of…

A silver Early-Medieval strap-end, dating to the c. 9th Century AD. This is a Thomas, G. Class A type strap-end, weighing 1.54g. It has a length of 28.8mm, width of 8.7mm and maximum thickness at the split end of 1.9mm. The longitudinal sides of this artefact have a slight convex curve. The en-face animal-headed terminal end accounts for 9.9mm of the artefact’s total length. The snout is the narrowest part of the object at 4.1mm. The snout has a slightly convexly curved shape to what would otherwise be a transverse terminal. On the upper surface two short shallow incis…

A copper-alloy Early-Medieval strap-end. This artefact is a class E, probably a type 1 Winchester style plant scroll simplified to a symmetrical openwork pattern and seems to have an absence of zoomorphic decorative element, or less likely might be a type 3 strap-end. This artefact weighs 15.5g, has a length of 48.2mm, maximum width of 24.4mm and maximum thickness of 4.9mm. The attachment end is rectangular. The reverse surface remains on the same plane as the rest of the artefact. However, the front surface has a reduced thickness, over a length of 8.6mm, of 2.3mm. There are fou…

A small Medieval copper-alloy strap-end of double sheet and double rivet construction with open sides. The artefact weighs 1.50g and has a length of 23.9mm. The attachment end is roughly transverse, with a slight diagonal angled slope. This end is the widest end measuring 9.4mm with a sheet thickness of 0.9mm. The opposite sheet has a width at this end of 8.1mm and thickness of 0.7mm. These two sheets are held apart, by an internal gap of 1.6mm, by a single rivet. This rivet is positioned in the approximate centre of the width, set c.1.5mm in from the open end. The rivet has a ci…

An incomplete silver strap-end of Early-Medieval date. This is a Thomas Class A, Type 1 strap-end. This artefact has an incomplete length of 22.9mm, maximum width of 15.2mm and maximum thickness of 3.5mm across the split end, 1.9mm of which is the gap between the two surfaces that forms the split. The sides are convexly curved. The lower end of the artefact terminates in a worn irregular transverse break that bends the metal backwards. The reverse surface would have been flat and is undecorated, however the break has formed a concave transverse bend at the base. The artefact has …

A copper-alloy artefact of Medieval date, probably the remains of a strap-end but possibly a book-plate. It weighs 5.71g and the rectangular sheet of copper-alloy has a width of 28.5mm and length of 26.4mm. The sheet has a thickness of 1.1mm. Three of the edges are straight however, one has been shaped to have a toothed/serrated edge. This edge has four 'V' shaped notches (c.f. Egan, G. and Pritchard, F. 2002, p.159, fig.104 dated to AD c.1350-c.1400). The width of these notches and the remaining edge to either side of them vary. Dried mud adheres in patches to the surfaces of the artefact obscuring some of the moulded decoration. A broken copper alloy forked spacer from a Medieval to Post-Medieval strap end. It is of composite construction and would have had a piece of sheet metal fixed to either side. The artefact is comprised of two prongs which extend from a spherical shaped terminal. This prominent knop (length: 9.7mm) has a thickened collar (width:1.8mm). Diameter of knop is 5.7mm. The knop end shows unclear signs of decoration and could have been influenced by the shape of an acorn. The possible remains of a copper alloy rivet shank remain 3.5mm below the collar. This incomplete copper-alloy Medieval strap-end weighs 11.18g. It has a length of 53.8mm, maximum width of 33.6mm and thickness of 2.6mm. The artefact is designed with two distinct zones. One zone has a crescentic shape and accounts for 30.9mm of the total length. The upper surface has incised decoration. An attempt to make this decoration appear to be symmetrical has been made however, close examination confirms that the incised design is not symmetrical. An incomplete late Roman strap end of amphora-shaped form with relatively angular shoulders to the main amphora-body. This strap end has a worn break at both the top and bottom of the artefact. Weight is 4.62g, incomplete length is 32.8mm, width is 13.5mm, thickness is 2.4mm. As the tip of the lower terminal is missing it is uncertain whether a bifurcated end was present for use as a nail cleaner. See SUR-D32237, CAM-67A1D1. These amphora-shaped strap-ends are believed to be of fourth to fifth century AD and have been worn as part of the late roman military uniforms (see BH-11C412).
