A fragment of an Early Medieval cast copper alloy openwork strap end, dating from AD 875 - 1100. It can be classified as Thomas' Class E. Only part of the middle survives. The strap end would have been tongue shaped (rectangular, probably with a rounded closed end). It has a series of holes giving an openwork pattern probably representing either a plant design (Class E type 1) or anthropomorphic decoration (Class E type 2), but not enough survives to tell which. Measurements are; length 25.5mm, width 16.1mm, thickness 2.1mm and weight 2.31g. …

At the wider end are two rivet hole, and there is a third hole or notch in the broken end. The third hole could be a slot for the pin if the plate is form a buckle. The plate is 23.4mm long,12.4mm wide and 0.6mm thick. It weighs…

A copper alloy artefact, probably a strap end of the folded sheet type, dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1250 - 1400. It is constructed from a strip of sheet copper alloy, folded over roughly half way along its length. In the centre of one end of the strip is a circular, domed extension; the other end tapers to a blunt point. In the centre of the underside of the circular extension is an integral single, copper alloy rivet with a large flat head which passes through a perforation in the other end to hold the strap end closed. There is no decoration, but there are tra…

An incomplete copper alloy Medieval strap end, dating from about AD 1200 - 1500. Only one sheet of the strap end survives. It would have had a sheet spacer and a second plate as well, or perhaps just a second plate. It is rectangular in plan, with rounded shoulders at the closed end, flanking a cast knob perhaps in the form of an acorn. The knop is thicker than the plate. There is no evidence of rivets. The attachment end is incomplete. The strap end is 28.5mm long, 11.5mm wide and 1.9mm thick. 1.2g. Compare various types in Egan and Pritchard (1991).

A medieval copper alloy strap end terminal in the form of an acorn dating from AD 1300 - 1450. Only the terminal survives, so the construction of the strap end is uncertain. The terminal is pointed, with a crosshatched cupola which has a collar at the base. It is likely that the terminal was cast in one with a forked spacer. See Egan and Pritchard (1991) page 144, plate 681 which has similar examples. The object is 14.6mm long, 6.0mm wide, 5.0mm thick and weighs 1.52g.

An incomplete Trewhiddle style Early Medieval copper alloy strap end of Thomas Class A dating from AD 750 - 950. The attachment end is incomplete. The closed end is worn, but zoomorphic with drilled eyes, one containing surviving silvering or niello, and looped ears. The body of the strap end has convex sides and a recessed central panel which contains a looped design in relief. This does not appear to be a zoomorphic design and is perhaps geometric. No exact parallel for the central panel is found in Thomas (2000), though it fits broadly into Class A. There is an iron rivet inter…
