Note: this item was found on a known Medieval settlement, making the likelihood of this object being Medieval very high.  A copper-alloy Medieval strap end in very poor condition. The tip of the strap end is sadly bent over, possibly due to plough damage. The none damaged side shows two layers of metal, which the strap would have gone into, and three rivets, the tips of which are covered up on the opposite side. There is a small hole at the widest end of it where a rivet would have gone through securing the 2 pieces of metal together. The item has a dark green patina. …

A cast copper-alloy 'Winchester style' strap end of later Early Medieval (10th - 11th century) date. The strap end is incomplete and the upper and lower faces are lost. The damage appears to be old as the breaks are either corroded or patinated. Originally the strap end would have been rectangular (tongue shaped) with a rounded base and riveted attachment plate. The stepped attachment plate is lost and broken across the rivet holes whilst the rounded terminal has lost its projecting point. A thickened transverse rib separates the rivets from the body of the strapend. The body of the s…

An incomplete medieval strap end or possibly a strap plate / chape from a medieval buckle c. 1300 - 1600 AD The strap end is abraded at both ends, so its plan is not certain, but it sides are straight and taper slightly inwards towards what was probably the terminal end. There is the suggestion of a rounded corner on both sides of the broken terminal end. In cross section it is flat with a shallow central ridge on the front face which contains a grove. Two rivet holes are present, one near each end, with only part of the one near the terminal surviving due to a break. There is iron st…
