Replica Jellinge style strap end dating from the early 21st century. The interlace decoration on the strap end is not an exact replica from a known strap end; however, the design was made up based on known Jellinge-style decorated metalwork. The type of decoration was used on Scandinavian or Anglo-Scandinavian metalwork in the 10th century and there are many examples on the PAS database. Normally artefacts dating from the 20th/21st century are not recorded on the PAS database, but this enty was made to showcase a very accurately made replica of an early medieval strap end used, a…

A Medieval copper-alloy strap-end. The object comprises two tongue-shaped plates, with a folded connecting strip at the bottom point. An in situ copper-alloy rivet, located centrally, a short distance from the top, further links the two plates together and would also have served to connect the now-missing strap. Length: 20.1mm; width: 9.8mm; thickness: 2.8mm; weight: 1g. Parallels for this form of strap-end were found in excavations in London, the vast majority in levels dating from the 14th to mid 15th centuries (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 127 - 129, cf. nos. 585 and 587).
