A copper alloy door knob type spear butt of the Roman or early Medieval period, circa 200-300 AD or 500 to 600AD. The object comprises a hollow shaft, tapering outwards slightly at the open end, with two concentric grooves around the neck. This then expands where it joins the 'door knob' terminal, at which point there is a moulded groove around the neck. The terminal is bulbous and also hollow and it has a rounded base. The metal is pitted and mottled with a green patina. An example near identical in appearance on the database is&nbs…

A copper alloy medieval iron spear head, AD.1100-1400. The object comprises most of the blade and socket of an iron assymetrical spearhead. The blade has broken at the tip losing its point, the break is straight and either caused by a sharp bend in the metal or fracturing along a line of slag. The socket is complete and is a closed type, this would suggest an origin in either the Roman or Medieval period. The lack of overlap commonly seen in Roman spear sockets would suggest the latter date as would the assymetrical blade shoulders. The socket has a single piercing approx 10mm from the…

A pointed flint tool, 58mm in length, perhaps a identifiable as a spear point, large arrowhead or possibly a plano convex knife and of later Neolithic date. The dorsal surface has scaled covering retouch; the ventral surface has a prominent bulbar scar but no retouch. The edges are damaged, most likely from post deposition abrasion. The tip is lost. The object is similar in shape to early Neolithic leaf shaped arrowheads and similar in size to later Neolithic "laurel leaves", but lacks the characteristic bifacial working of either. See SF-28BF82 for similar.

An iron implement, possibly an Early Medieval socketed spear dating from AD 450 - 1000. It has an open split socket which is U shaped in cross-section and has a square peg hole. The socket tapers to the solid neck which is square in cross-section. The neck continues to taper to a point. It is uncertain if this is a break or whether the object is complete. It is 143.9mm long, 22.7mm wide and 16.4mm thick. 77.9g. It is unclear whether the pointed end is a break and the object would have continued into a spear head, perhaps one similar to WAW-71A829, or whether this is the intended…

An incomplete Early Medieval spear dating from AD 550-600. This is an Insular, Swanton series I spear head. The spear has a slender leaf-shaped blade with a corrugated cross section and a welded socket with scribed lines encircling the point of the transverse rivet at the mouth. At the broader part contains two shallow fullers, lunate in outline, one either side of a central line. Swanton (1973:117) writes " series I and J, characterised by the incorporation of longitudinal fullering, which feature seems to have been characteristic development of certain early west Saxon forges. Iron spearhead of probably late Medieval date. The blade is complete and a broad leaf shape with convex curved sides widening evenly form the point to the rounded base of the blade. A rounded rib runs from the socket about half way along the length of the blade on both sides; the ribs thicken towards the base but appear solid. The blade is otherwise flat and even in thickness. Due to the level of corrosion it is hard to identify the width of the sharpened edges, if any. The socket is conical and tapering, continuing the line of the ribs but only hollow until it meets the blade. The en…

The blade is bent to 130mm long, with an estimated original length of around 170mm. It has angular shoulders measuring 27.8mm narrowing to a tip of 6.7mm. The…

An incomplete iron spear head dating to the Roman period. The spear possesses an open socket which is broken. The socket expands to a leaf-shaped blade with a long tapering point, the tip of which is missing. The edges of the blade are noticeably blunt and it is possible that this was not actually a functional weapon. The spear measures 130mm in length, with the socket measuring 35mm in length. The diameter of the socket is 13mm. The blade has a length of 95mm and a maximum width of 34mm. It has a thickness of 4mm. It weighs 46g.

A copper-alloy 'Door Knob' spear butt of Roman or Early Medieval date, c. 200-300 AD or 500-600 AD. The object consists of a hollow plano-convex base, which extends upwards with a hollow flaring cylinder. The upper face of the convex part has traces of a raised circular section, which is where the cylinder meets the plano-convex element. The flat face has denting and a small perforation (1 mm of diameter) due probably to the use. The outer surface is corroded and abraded. These objects were once thought to be Iron Age in date, however they are now known to be of either Roman or Ear…

This has a narrow tapering head that give an elongated lozenge appearance with rounded shoulders the blades on the either side are parallel and terminate in a truncated point, with a low spine running down the centre of both side. The split socket may have been split on both sides, however, corrosion removing elements of the sockets to give the impression that it had a double split remains a strong possibility.
