County: Wrexham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast late Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axehead, dating to c.900-700 BC.
The fragment consists of the axehead's cutting edge only, the rest of the object is missing. The cutting edge is worn and an abraded break reveals a shallow portion of the socket that is c.6mm deep.
The axehead fragment is sub-trapezoidal in plan. The broken edge of the axehead runs transversely across its body giving an irregular, but mostly flat, edge. In cross section the body is sub-rectangular, as revealed by the break, while the blade is vesica (a pointed oval) shaped. …

A fragment of a copper alloy (bronze) socketed axehead of middle to late Bronze Age date (c. 1300-800 BC). The fragment comprises the blade, above which is a worn and abraded break that reveals a shallow portion of the socket.
The fragment is sub-trapezoidal in plan and has a triangular cross section. The blade is an asymmetrical crescent, which is possibly due to wear and abrasion. The angle of the right-hand side of the blade is steeper than that of the left-hand side. The broken edge of the axe runs at an angle inwards from the bottom before rising towards the top end of …

A fragment of middle to late Bronze Age, probably socketed, axehead dating c. 1500-800 BC. Only the blade and part of the body survives, with its hollow interior. The blade is crescentric, heavily worn and damaged in several places. The faces of the body are flat and gradually splay to create the lentoid sides, so that the body is sub-rectangular in cross-section. Both faces of the axe are uneven with wear and abrasion. The break across the body is uneven and of the same mid-green patina as the rest of the body, suggesting a break in antiquity. Further typologi…

A probable late Bronze Age fragment of a copper-alloy flanged socketed axehead.
It is relatively small, and less than 50% remains, however what does remain is in a relatively good state of presevation.
It has a dark grey-green patina (80%), and a light grey-green patina (20%). The broken edge is quite abraded, which suggests that the breakage occured in antiquity.
Socketed axeheads are ubiquitous across the Bronze Age period in Britain, however with so little of this axehead remaining, there are no discernible features remaining, thus rendering a more specific time period for this f…

An incomplete copper alloy socketed axehead of late Bronze Age date (c 1000 - 800 BC) corresponding to the Ewert Park metalworking phase (Needham’s (1996) Period 7). The surviving portion of the axehead is 39.4mm in width and 47.5mm in length, comprising the front end which has a flared, semi circular blade, with rounded corners. There is no evidence of any decoration or casting seams. The break across the axehead reveals the interior to be hollow and the cross section to be of a sub rectangular shape.

Copper alloy probable socketed axe-head fragment. The edge of a crescentic cutting edge from a copper alloy axe-head, most likely of socketed form – the latest type. Diagonal striations on one side of the blade may arise from its sharpening, suggesting this may have broken away - perhaps on a casting flaw - from an axe that was in use. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000-800

A complete cast copper alloy socketed axehead of the Late Bronze Age, Ewart Park phase (c.900-800 cal BC))
The socket of the axe is square and lipped. The blade of the axe has a very slight curve at both sides. The aperture measures 23.6 by 20.2mm. On both the front and reverse of the axe is a single rib. The body is slightly facetted towards the edges and both sides are sub triangular in shape: the apex of the triangle is at the point of the blade.
