Thirty five complete lead musket balls or shot dating to the Post Medieval period (c. AD 1600-1700), found in close proximity to each other. Twenty five were found in one area, with a further ten 10m away in an adjacent field. They look freshly cast with indentations were the sprue may have been removed as opposed to a 'proud' sprue mark. Most of spherical and complete, but two are distorted, and this is probably as a result of miscasting, versus use. All the musket balls are a mid to light grey colour, with an even surface patina. There are also two p…

Post Medieval lead alloy shot or ball. The ball has been fired and impacted something soft, probably wet ground. It also exhibits faceting, typical of gas jetting, formed in the barrel when the firearm was discharged. The size of shot is typical of military firearms of the 1600s and 1700s. Dates to between c1600 and c1800 AD. Diameter approximately 22mm and weight 42.25g.

Post Medieval lead alloy shot assemblage of 11 balls. All the shot has been flattened as a result of direct impact with a hard surface, probably stone. There are lines on four of the bits of shot that may be remnant casting seams, or impressions of the objects they struck. Probably dating to between c1600 and c1900 AD. Diameters 15mm to 19mm, weights 2.4g to 3.4g, and total assemblage weight 33.49g.

Post Medieval lead alloy shot or ball. Probably distorted during discharge from the weapon or by being miscast. There is an area of what looks like gas 'scalloping', but this is probably a product of manufacture rather than a result of impact. Probably dating to between c1600 and c1900 AD. Length 10mm, width 9mm, thickness 8mm, and weight 4.23g.

Post Medieval lead alloy shot or ball. Probably unused or spent. It has been modified by chewing. Though the chewing could remove mass from the ball, it was still done as the chewing caused greater damage to it's intended target. Modern bullets with hollow points are manufactured for a similar reason. Diameter approximately 10mm and weight 5.33g. Probably dating to between c1600 and c1900 AD.

Post Medieval lead alloy shot assemblage of 21 balls. Mostly unused or spent. Some miscast and some demonstrating probable light impact damage. Found in conjunction with LANCUM-936FA4, LANCUM-93AEC9, and others, suggesting that the area was probably a popular site for either attempting to shoot wildfowl, or for casting the shot. A good number of lead and lead alloy weights were found in the area too. Very few of the lead and lead alloy objects found in the vicinity showed much in the way of abrasion and many retained casting nipples and seams. Probably dating to between …

Post Medieval lead shot. Two balls are spherical, the other is mishapen. The unfired one has a visible mould line and sprue scar. The fired ball has gas erosion scars and two flattened impact scars. There are what appears to be tooth marks on the mishapen ball. They date to between c1600 and c1800 AD. The balls' weights suggest they were for use with a carbine or a civil firearm like a small bore fowling gun. They are too light and small to be musket balls. The unfired ball's diameter is 15mm and the weight is 17.23g. The fired ball's diameter is 15mm and the weight is 19.55g. The …

A cast lead musket ball, of post-Medieval date, about AD 1600 - 1800. The remains of a circular casting sprue can be seen and, on the opposite hemisphere to the sprue is a circumferential groove, possibly a casting flaw. It is 12.3mm in diameter and weighs 8.69gm, suggesting that it was intended for use in a pistol (Harding D F, 2012, Lead Shot of the English Civil War). It could also be one sphere from a dumbell shot. The diameter is 12mm and the weight 7.42g.

Lead ball, possibly shot, dating to the post-medieval period (c. 1600 - 1800 AD). The object is largely spherical but is slightly misshapen. A rectangular flap at one end has separated slightly from the body of the object, possibly as a result of impact. A thin lead strip runs around the circumference of the ball. Two further thin lead strips cross the two halves of the object. The object has a cream-coloured patina. It is 18.34mm in diameter and weighs 32g. While this object is a similar size and weight to musket shot, no parallels have been found to the crossed lead strips on thi…

Cache of twenty lead alloy musket balls and one lead alloy fragment of post-Medieval date, about AD 1600 - 1800. The diameter ranges between 15mm to 13mm and the combined weight is 206.29g suggesting that they were intended for use in a pistol (Harding D F, 2012, Lead Shot of the English Civil War). The remains of the casting seams and two casting sprues are visible. The fragment is probably a scrap fragment intended to cast into a pistol ball.
