Complete iron round shot of probable seventeenth century date (AD 1600 - AD 1700). Diameter 39mm. (roughly 1.5 inches). Weight 217.28g. (7.6645 ounces). The shot is probably ammunition for a long barreled piece known as a culverin or robinet (Blackmore 1976, 391-409). It is slightly pitted and corroded. About 50% of the original surface survives.

A selection of 141 iron round shots, lead shots and stone shots recovered by Eric and Gordan Hazelton from the intertidal zone in Harwich Harbour between 1972 and 1988. The 141 shots show a wide variety of calibres and probably come from a number of different artillery pieces. A Post Medieval iron incomplete bar shot, probably reused as a weight (17th century). The object is spherical with a rib running circumferentially, one pole is flattened and there is a scar where a bar projected. Geoff Egan suggests this was originally one end of a dumbbell-shaped bar shot with the bar and other sphere removed possibly to reuse it as a weight. Dimensions: Diameter: 50.13mm; weight: 445.5g. A cast iron cannon ball, and judging from the size and weight, probably for use in a Falconet dating from c. 1500-1700. A Falconet was a small cannon used both on land and in light naval vessels. Iron shot Solid cast iron shot. Diameter 82.29mm. (c.3 ½ inches). This calibre suggests the shot to be made for a saker or saker drake (a short-barrelled version), which were among the smaller smooth bore muzzle-loading field guns introduced c.1600, and remaining in use throughout the 17th century. Such guns might also form a light armament for merchant ships, or to defend fortifications. The saker is described by Henry and Delf (page 9 – citing Robert Norton, who wrote in 1643) as having a calibre of 3 ½ inches, firing shot weighing5 ½ lbs (c.2kg+). Reference: English Civil …
