Two complete lead shots dating to the Modern period (c. AD 1850-2000). The shots are teardrop shaped with a casting casting sprue on the base. Around the widest part of the circumference are a series of undulating ridges, which are slightly more worn on one shot than the other. There are some signs of wear but they do not appear to have been fired. Both objects have a whitish grey patina. No comparable examples have yet been found on the PAS database. The finder has helpfully suggested they resemble a form of bullet known as a 'Jacob's rifle' bullet dating from the 1850s, with charac…

Lead possible shot. A cast round section billet, rounded and slightly convex at one end, dimpled at the other. The dimple, of diameter 10.5mm, might arise from use of a ramrod. Unlike the majority of lead slugs, this object has a slight medial expansion, and so appears oval or barrel-shaped rather than cylindrical. Patinated overall. If this identification were sustained, it may point to a 17th-century date, as this period saw a wide range of specialised projectiles devised for use with guns of all calibres. A slug could form a supplementary, or indeed the main load, for a smoothbore m…

A cast lead musket ball of Post-Medieval date, about AD 1600 - 1800. It is 17.5mm in diameter and weighs 31.82g. It has a neatly trimmed casting seam, and a small flattened area at each end, one probably where the sprue has been removed. Two cast lead alloy shot of Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1700 - 1800). Both are broadly spherical and there is no evidence that it has been fired. The surfaces are even and a cream / light grey in colour. Similar shot have been dated to the later Post-Medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. This is possibly from an 18th century pistol. The shot measures i) 13.08mm in diameter and weighs 10.32grams. ii) 11.72mm in diameter and weighs 8.65grams.
