Cast copper alloy object, possibly a scoop, of uncertain date but likely medieval to post medieval (c.AD 1400-1700). The object has a slightly flattened shaft that measures 17mm in length. The end of the shaft appears to have an old break and is therefore likely to be part of a larger object. The opposite end widens to an oval-shaped scoop. The scoop is 12.5mm wide and has a shallow depth of roughly 2.5mm. Th object is worn and has patches of light green patina. It is unclear what the object originally functioned as. It is possible it is the end of an ear scoop, however the …

Copper alloy object, probably the scoop from a seed drill. A cast rectangular-section shank with indented sides conferring the appearance of a barley-sugar twist, and with a flat circular bowl at one end; broken across a narrow [2mm] lug at the other. The broken end perhaps marks where this component was attached to a rotating drum. This is of similar size to the hemispherical concavo-convex objects identified as from seed drills, and a comparable function in the distribution of seed by hand or animal-powered machine is suggested. Post-Medieval to Modern, 1850-1950. Length: 52.2mm,…

A complete copper alloy scoop, of possible Roman or later date. The handle is flattened, rectangular in cross-section and expands slightly towards its outer end. At its inner end it joins an oval bowl section, slightly concave on one face and convex on the other. The object has been folded in two so that the handle sits against the bowl. There are traces of a white metal coating in places on the surface. Although the patina and presence of a white metal coating suggest a Roman date, the object is unusually simple in form and may be of a later medieval or even post-medieval date. …

Cast copper-alloy seed drill scoop, comprising a robust round-section slightly tapered stem and a hemispherical bowl, bent where the two elements meet. The scoop would be one of an array of identical projections from a revolving drum which would scoop seed from a hopper and deposit it in the drill. These objects are often mistaken for pharmaceutical measures, though their wide rural currency is unsurprising given the actual function. Their appearance marks an early stage of mechanisation forming part of the Agricultural Revolution of the later 18th and early 19th centuries. Suggested …
