Object type: SCABBARD FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy chape from a sword or dagger scabbard. Probably dates from the 13th or 14th century.
The artefact has been formed by folding a piece of sheet-metal into an open-ended cone and then flattening it slightly. The vertical seam is visible at the back, while the jagged top side is heavily damaged. The corroded surfaces exhibit traces of a white-metal coating.
The chape measures 28.4mm long, 18.3mm wide and 8.6mm thick. The weight is 2.72g.
