A neolithic stone axe roughout. The piece is roughly sub rectangular in form, oval in cross section. From the predominantly flat butt, the sides run parallel before tapering to a rounded end (which if completed would have formed the cutting edge of the axe). Both sides of the roughout are gently convex. Visible flakes have been knapped from the roughout, and the piece resembles the rough shape of an axe, however the find has been discarded prior to completion. Roughouts may have been discarded for several reasons, including the thickness of the stone, or fracturing/damage …

A flint possible axehead rough-out of Neolithic date (4000-2100 BC), measuring 140.6mm in length, 93.6mm in (max.)width, 50.7mm in max.thickness and weighing 710g (to the nearest 2g). The flint is grey in colour (light and dark) and retains large patches of cortex to both faces. Flake removals on one face are directed away from a central point while the other face is relatively flat (and retains a large band of cortex). With thanks to Mike Trevarthen and Ciorstaidh Hayward Trevarthen for the identification of this object.

Neolithic adze rough-out made from a thermally fractured (or "pot lid" fracture) piece of lightly patinated mottled grey flint broken from a larger nodule, two small unretouched areas remain on the ventral face and two small patches of weathered cortex remains on the dorsal face. Both faces are crudely hard hammer struck with some flake scars terminating in hinges. It is unlikely this piece was finished and it appears it was abandoned before completion. 120 x 44 x 25 mm.

Possible roughout for the manufacture of an axe, or a tranchet adze, made from what is likely to be an opaque, blotchy, light grey flint with some recortication. Small spots of cortex survive. Bifacially flaked to produce a pointed oval section with some battering on edge. One end sharpened with a tranchet flake, the other steeply truncated. While this object may be a roughout it is also possible that it was a Mesolithic tranchet axe. The style of the flaking supports a Neolithic date. Length 102mm, Width 44mm, Thickness 21mm, Mass 130.2g.

Roughout for the manufacture of an axe made from what is likely to be an opaque, blotchy, light grey flint with some recortication. No cortex survives. Bifacially flaked to produce a lozenge section with some battering on edge. One end roughly pointed, the other steeply truncated with the removal of two large flakes. While this object may be a roughout it is also possible that it was a Mesolithic axe. Length 100mm, Width 38mm, Thickness 35mm, Mass 153.2g.

Roughout for the manufacture of an axe made from what is likely to be an opaque, blotchy, light grey flint with full recortication. Probable roughout for the manufacture of a an axe, made from an opaque, blotchy, grey flint with light recortication. The flint is of poor quality and contains faults. On one face is an area of cortex. Bifacially flaked, to produce a pointed oval section, the implement bears a fortuitous resemblance to a pointed handaxe, a phenomon noted on other Sussex flint mine sites (Curwen, 1954,127-8 Fig. 32). This object is best interpreted as a Neolithic roughout, abandoned early in the process of axe manufacture. Length 136mm, Width 79mm, Thickness 41mm, Mass 390.6g.

Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age tertiary triangular bifacial roughout with steep semi-invasive retouch along the two longer lateral edges. Made of mottled grey flint with some spotty iron staining around the edges. This piece resembles an unfinished large Ballyclare type Barbed and Tanged arrowhead, though this is unlikely as this type is very rare in Norfolk and the South-east in general, and at 16.8g it is rather heavy to be a transverse arrowhead. An enigmatic piece. 53 x 37 x 9mm.

Worked axe tuff fragment of probable later Neolithic date (2500-2100 BC) which appears to be a roughout that was broken along the length during shaping and then probably discarded. The length is 195mm and the width 92mm. The axe is knapped from a light blueish/grey buff volcanic tuff. This axe like many of the larger and finished (polished) Langdale axes is sub-rectangular in plan with distinctive humped faces. The axe fragment bears a series of striking scars. It is impossible to source axes such as these without a detailed petrological analysis of the rock. This would allow the orig…

Large middle to late Neolithic axehead roughout made from a Cumbrian Group VI Langdale tuff dating from ca. 3500-2500BC. The roughout is in very good condition, with only little modern damage. It had been found by a farmer in a field and used as a doorstop on the farm for several decades. The roughout is thin-butted, double convex in section and has one crudely rounded and one almost rectangular end: the latter one would have been shaped into the blade. It expands in plan from both the butt and the blade end to reach its maximum width about midway along its length. Other recor…

Neolithic Graig Lwyd roughout found eroding out of a bank. It has been bifacially-worked and has well-defined flake removals. However, it has been subject to erosion for some time and as such all edges are smooth The axe has a prominent butt. A dark greyish-brown patina has built up on parts of the object and contrasts with the light brownish-grey colour of the stone.

Neolithic Graig Lwyd roughout found eroding out of a bank. It has been bifacially-worked and has well-defined flake removals. However, it has been subject to erosion for some time and as such all edges are smooth. This axe is unusually big. It has a dark grey patina, particularly on one face. The remainder of the object has a mottled grey/orange/brown appearance.
