An incomplete silver baby (comforter) consisting of a rattle and a whistle from the Victorian to Edwardian period (ad 1820 - 1910) The object is split along the join seam. Around the circumference of the object at it's centre are two banded ribs to which 3 bells would have been attached. Two of the 3 bells that were originally attached are missing, probably in antiquity. The remaining bell shows signs of damage. The surface is decorated with a mixture of floral and geometric incised lines. Length: 60.27mm.  Diameter at centre: 14.05mm Weight: 12.23gms

Copper alloy rattle. A two-piece pressed metal rattle, formed by the crimping together of a pair of heart-shaped plates at their flanged edges, with a clapper or clapper loose within. Function is indicated by the legend BABY in bold relief on both sides, with a comma-shaped stroke below. Lightly squashed. Cursory research on antique and vintage sales websites suggest these might be equipped with a handle. Dates between 1880 and 1921 are ascribed to examples in silver, with some of German manufacture. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1880-1920 Height: 42.1mm, Width: 43.8mm…

Description: Part of a cast Roman copper-alloy, handle from a priest’s ritual ceremonial rattle. One end consists of a concave ovular-disc plate that would have attached to a thin-walled circular metal box containing metal balls that would rattle when shaken. The exterior surface of the plate is decorated with a single circumferential groove around a narrowed centrally projecting neck that extends and intersects with the upper body of the handle to form two indented rectangular plates either side. Each of these rectangular plates are indented with two/three circular recessions align…

Spherical Medieval c. AD14th century (Spencer 1998: 209) lead alloy pilgrim rattle containing fragments of shell. The rattle now heavily distorted would have been a handheld sphere as there is no evident sign of a handle. It contains the broken remains of cockle shells, a symbol of pilgrimage. Dark grey in colour it is made up of an open latticework of triangular sectioned frames. There is a central boss to each hemisphere from which small spokes radiate to a ring from which more spokes radiate to a second ring forming triangles. This second ring is then connected via a zig-zagging fr…

A fired clay object, approximately egg-shaped. Around the sides are two tiers of 6 approximately circular holes per tier, arranged in the order 4,2,4,2. On the two other opposing sides there are two larger oval holes which may indicate the position of a handle. One hole has not been fully perforated. Between the smaller holes the clay has been coarsely grooved with pairs (twice)and single line divisions, prior to firing. There are similar grooves around the two larger holes. The object is in a white firing clay, coarsely-tempered. There is some iron staining.
