Lead powder flask cap. A small cylindrical vessel with thickened rim, now squashed closed. A small loop is flattened against the lower side, for strung attachment to the flask. A vertical strengthening rib appears on one side of the lid, with a mould line opposite. Patinated. The smaller of two similar objects presented together. This is the cap from a powder flask. A powder flask might be used singly by a sportsman or might be carried on a bandolier as one of the ‘twelve apostles’ to equip a musketeer. It held a single measured charge. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1…

A post Medieval lead alloy powder flask nozzle. The base comprises a hollow and open ended container, which has been crushed and which had a pair of flanking attachment loops at its top, one of which has been lost. A conical nozzle would have projected from this container but has been lost, with only the scar remaining around a circular aperture in the top. There is a simple decorative linear rim around the open end.

Lead possible powder flask cap. A flattened item, now of rectangular form but perhaps arising from the flattening of a cylindrical lid leaving straight edges and opposed rounded sides. The edges of the putative cylinder are pressed together at one end of the object; the other end shows brighter against an otherwise patinated surface, and may indicate a soldered mend or localised heating, possibly of recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700 Length: 31.7mm, Width: 28.8mm, Thickness: 10mm, Weight: 29.47gms

Part of a powder flask, being a complete Post Medieval lead powder holder cap, dating to cAD 1600 - 1700. The powder cap has a flat base with the sides expanding outwards a little to the open mouth which has a raised rim. On either side of the base is a small loop which would have housed a short length of cord to fasten the powder measure to the bandolier. Both loops are in towards the sides of the cap. Parallels suggest that this object dates from the period of the English Civil Wars (1642-49).  Dimensions: Length: 24.8 mm Height: 17.…

Incomplete and flattened Post Medieval lead powder-flask nozzle. Cast in the form of a tapering cup with a bordered rim at the larger end. On the outside of the narrower end there are two diametrically opposed loops, whilst in the centre is the stubby vestige of the missing hollow nozzle used for delivering the measured powder to the weapon. The object was originally attached via the loops as the lid of a flask, probably fashioned from wood. One side of the object has been crushed in against the other. Circa AD 17th century.

A lead nozzle from a powder flask, of probable 17th century date. As found the item is squashed flat, but it would originally have been round and hollow, with a cup 16.5mm high by c.20mm diameter attached to a tapered nozzle 21.6mm in length. There are 2 symmetrically disposed loops with an external diameter of c.7mm at the bottom of the cup section. A near identical example is illustrated in FRG datasheet 11, as figure 4, which is dated to the English civil wars [1642 - 1651].
