An incomplete leaded, copper-alloy object, probably a plumb bob. Probably dating to the Roman period, c.AD 43-410 or possible a post-Roman period. At the head of the bob is lug which is circular in plan and cylindrical in section. The lug is not pierced giving the plumb bob no obvious means of attachment. This suggests it is broken although there is no clear point of break. The lug extends to a inverse conical body. Close to the head of the bob, the body is decorated with a circumferential groove. Closer to the terminal of the body there is another circumferential groove…

An incomplete, corroded cast copper alloy and iron possible plumb bob of possible Roman to Post Medieval date (c. AD 43-1800). The object is conical, being largely triangular in plan with a largely circular cross section. There is a circular collar near the terminal at the top of the object, above of which is an iron protrusion. There is evidence of iron infill throughout the object, with iron corrosion around the object and a fracture running along one side with a sub-triangular bit of the copper alloy shell tearing away at an angle, revealing iron infill There are a n…

A complete lead alloy plumb bob of probable Roman date, c. AD 43-410. It has a sub-conical design with a narrow neck, c. 14.8 mm in diameter and 3.5 mm high, above the conical base before a plano-convex disc, c. 21.5 mm in diameter, above this neck groove. There is a narrow cylindrical aperture in the centre of this disc which extends down to the neck where it links to another cylindrical aperture, perpendiucular to the first one, crossing through the diameter of the neck; this hollow would have been for the attachment of the plumb bob to a suspe…

Copper alloy possible plumb bob. Cast sub-spherical object with a projecting round-collared lug with traces of either its broken continuation [perhaps as a loop] or a very snugly fitted component in its end. A broad medial band appears to have arisen from wear, forming two facets meeting at the midpoint of the sphere. A range of fine and mainly vertical scratches appear on these facets, though they do not continue onto the undamaged curving surfaces above and below the worn zone. Lightly incised marks on the upper half may include the letter W or letters VV next to another broader goug…

Cast lead alloy plumb bob, c.AD 43-1900. A simple plumb bob made of cast lead alloy, roughly rectangular in profile and square in section. There is a small and roughly-made groove around near the head where a string would have sat - this is the best indication for the item being a plumb bob, as weights typically either have holes for suspension or no marks at all. It is very difficult to date this item, as similar finds have been found across many periods.

A cast lead artefact, possibly a plumb bob or weight, probably of Post-Medieval date, about AD 1600 - 1900. It is ovoid in form, divided into two equal hemispheres by a prominent, circumferential ridge. In the centre of the lower hemisphere is a large, moulded, circular pellet. In the centre of the upper hemisphere is a further pellet, this one carrying the remains of a ferrous suspension loop. Testing with a magnet suggests that the iron runs all the way through the centre of the object. There are no other markings and the artefact has a smooth, light grey patina. It is 26.5…

A lead alloy weight of uncertain date, likely Roman to post Medieval (AD 43-1800). The weight is roughly bodkin shaped and could be a plumb bob, though it could have served a different purpose. It starts at 3.46mm thick and 5.81mm wide, expanding to 14.31mm thick and 17.14mm wide at 26.65mm along the length of the plumb bob. From that point, it tapers gradually to 9.05mm thick and 12.26mm wide at 35.43mm along the length, before forming a rounded bottom. There is no central piercing, which would suggest that there was no central cord. Likewise, there is no evidence of a susp…

A cast lead suspension weight or plumb bob of uncertain date, Roman to Post Medieval, AD 43-1800. The weight is ovoid, or sub-conical in form with an integral cast suspension loop in the form of a projecting cylinder with a transverse hole through it. The weight has a smooth, well-developed patina with some post-depositional scratches. It is 29.4mm in height, 24.1mm in diameter, and 78.1g. The mass does not appear to correspond closely with any regular system of weighing, perhaps suggesting that the object is a plumb bob or weight. It does not stand without support. Compare HAM…

Probably post-medieval lead plumb bob in rather fresh condition, of circular cross-section with iron wire within a median hole which runs the full height. The lower part is conical, the central part slightly wider with a rounded edge and a convex upper face from the centre of which springs a (now bent) shank with three encircling ribs, one near the base, one below the top and one at the top. The wire would have extended upwards to form a suspension loop. No close parallel has been noted. Diameter 23mm. Height 32mm. Weight 38.6g. Probably 18th - 19th century. Finder's number LF1/16
