Lead possible pipe fragment. Cast cylinder with an irregular central hole of length 9.5mm and width 9mm, possibly formed by rolling a rectangular billet of thick [7-9mm] cast lead sheet and crimping or sealing the ends, a process of manufacture perhaps visible at one end. Patinated and abraded. This object may have been intended for the sealing of a watertight joint. However, it also resembles solid weights of a waisted bobbin or cotton reel form which are reported from Roman sites, albeit their function is unknown. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Length: 29.7mm, Diameter (long…

Lead possible pipe fragment. A fragment of cast lead pipe, lightly squashed, patinated overall. There is the appearance of a taper from one end to the other, so this might be a hollow conical weight or part thereof rather than an item associated with water supply. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1900 Length: 20.3mm, Width: 19.0mm, Thickness (wall of tube): 3.2mm, Weight: 21.47gms

A section of lead alloy water or drain pipe, possibly a plumbaria of Roman date. The pipe is 370mm in length, weighs 3.9kg and has a diameter of 60mm. It is made from a thick sheet of lead which has been rolled into a tube and has a butt seam along one side which does not appear to have been soldered. One end is flared out into a connection to a tank or basin with a maximum circumference of 205mm. This object is comparable to an example of a drain pipe excavated from the Bothwelhaugh Roman Fort in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Lead pipe fragment. A short length of a round-section cast lead pipe which is blocked by poured lead or solder of a greyish tint at one side, and neatly sawn across the other. Patinated, though this affects only the pipe, not the metallic mend or alteration. Lightly squashed. Lead pipe. A cast object, with walls of thickness 2mm at its broader end where it appears as a seamless pipe, and tapered to conical form at the other end, where an aperture of diameter 7.4mm appears, while the wall is here of thickness c.3mm or more. The part between these different ends is torn, nd the object lightly squashed. Three roughly pierced holes of diameter c.6mm appear between the pipe and its conical terminal, and might suggest a function as a strainer or distributor. Patinated. A conical form was employed for sections of interlocking ceramic pipe in late medieval gardens…

Lead pipe. A short length of a pipe with thick wall and a central channel of diameter 10.2mm; patinated. One end is slightly bevelled and perhaps slightly splayed, perhaps suggesting a particular and localised function for the object; its construction appearing too heavy for it to be an offcut from a water pipe. Patinated overall and dented or lightly gouged at one [the splayed] end. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1900. Length: 34.9mm, Diameter: 22.7mm, Thickness (wall): 8.8mm, Weight: 112.28gms

Lead pipe fragment. A small fragment of a small bore pipe with a visible seam, indicating that the lead was cast as a flat sheet and then rolled around a former and the butted seam then sealed. Lightly patinated and squashed. The working technique is typical of medieval lead pipe of larger bores, but the surface condition - other than those aspects arising from fortuitous impact - is good, so the pipe was probably made locally for a specific purpose. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1900. Length (as found): 34.5mm, Diameter: c.12mm, Thickness: 1.4mm, Weight: 13.70gms

Lead pipe fragment. A short length of tubular lead pipe, probably made by casting a rectangular sheet of lead of structural gauge and rolling it around a former. The appearance at one end is of an overlapped seam, but a flattened longitudinal strip within the pipe coincides with the position of this feature. This flat strip may indicate where a separate strip of lead seals the meeting of edges. This technique was usual for the making of medieval water pipes, though probably continued thereafter. As neither end appears to have been cut, this short length may have been made to unite and…

Fragment of a cast lead pipe, sub-oval on plan and trapezoid in profile and section. The relatively large central hole is circular in plan and cylindrical in profile and measures 13 mm in diameter at the base and tapers to 11 mm before it expands to a stepped recessed area that is 15 mm in diameter, just below the rim, which is 20 mm in diameter. This difference in diameter is partly due to the residue within the aperture, including a glassy black fragment which may be slag, which was probably material moving through the pipe. It was probably used during the industrial age, from the l…

Lead pipe fragment. Segment from a cast tubular pipe with a thick [c.5mm] wall and a bore of c.5mm. Lightly compressed and patinated overall, including at its cleanly cut ends. There is no sign of a seam or other evidence for the making of the pipe in a sand bed by rolling lead sheet, which was the usual method adopted in antiquity. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. The object appears to be part of a decorated brass lip or rim. The decorated face is convex, the undecorated face is concave. The decoration comprises a wide plain band along the outer edge of the object 7.11mm wide adjacent to this is a series of diagonal raised parallel lines, 9.32mm long. The object seems to have been broken off at the edge of these lines as there is an irregular unfinished edge here. There is a dark grey to black tarnish which fills the depressions in the decoration and is also visible on the raised surfaces including the broken off ends and edge of the object. Th…
