Copper alloy probable lamp fitting. An ornate bilaterally decorated fragment comprising two nested vegetal curls with projecting sub-triangular leaves along its outer edges. The ornamental treatment is abandoned only at the site of a small trapezoid block, integrally cast, at one end of the fragment. The object was probably made in a single plane, though now lightly twisted. Probably from a decorative domestic oil lamp, though which bit of it is uncertain. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1825-1875 Length: 109.6mm, Width: 50mm, Thickness: 3.4mm, Weight: 34.58gms

Copper alloy lamp hanger, as kindly identified by Ed Caswell. Cast oval-section vertical bar or stalk with an apical rhomboid loop with a drilled central hole, and with three integrally cast branched arms of sub-rectangular section at its base, each thinned and drilled at its end, as is a further U-shaped lug at the base of the vertical stalk. The ends of the arms are all now slightly bent. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1450 Height: 32.1mm, Width: 32.9mm, Thickness (central stalk): 4.4mm, Weight: 6.69gms

Copper alloy oil lamp fitting. Part of the cylindrical sheet metal mantle from an oil lamp for domestic lighting. The upper edge bears rounded crenellations while an open cross-hatch and a series of drilled holes provides some external texture. An internal loop and bar would relate to the adjustment of the wick. Copper alloy oil lamp fragment. A hollow unit comprising a bevelled circular concavo-convex top with round central aperture, crimped around a cylindrical base with constricted and torn lower edge. A rod passing between the two retains a cog with eight triangular teeth. Turning the rod, the teeth engaged the fabric wick of an oil lamp to enable it to be lowered or raised, and the brightness of light to be regulated. This component would be situated between an oil reservoir below and the mantle and lampshade above. Such lamps would use whale oil, a major product of Hull. Suggested date:…

An incomplete possible copper alloy lamp hanger dating to the Medieval period, (AD 1100-1500). The object has a circular head with a large circular perforation. There is one long arm that extends from the circular head and curves back on itself to a rounded hook. The remaining arm slighly expands and flares towards the hook end. Extending from the head in the two opposing corners are now damaged and broken terminals that would have presumably extended to two further arms with hooks at the end. The object has a corroded mid brown coloured patina. A similar complete example re…

Copper alloy item of uncertain use, probably a candle or lamp holder and of uncertain date, possibly Roman or Medieval. The item appears almost complete and is made of four copper alloy pieces. At one end is a conical socket with an open end and a triangular gap down one side where the triangular sheet piece was rolled into a socket and the edges didn't fully join. It is possible this is a socket to go onto a woodern pole or handle as it does not have the more cylindrical section common on candlesticks but a function as a socket for a candle can't be ruled out. The cone is 18.8mm in d…

A copper-alloy lamp suspender of Medieval date. The artefact comprises a slightly domed, irregular plate, from which spring the remains of five perforated lugs. The hanger extends vertically upwards from the top of this plate and is of oval section, with a collar beneath its worn apex loop. Height: 14.6mm; length: 20.1mm; width: 16.3mm. weight: 3.03g. Similar artefacts have been found in excavations in London and are discussed by Egan (1998: 130 - 133). Their interpretation as lamp hangers is based on evidence provided by contemporary illustrations, along with the fact that s…
