An incomplete copper-alloy discoid fragment of an inscribed object, now in two pieces and of Post Medieval date, AD 1700 - 1900. In plan, the object appears to have been circular, but only about three fifths survives. There is an irregular jagged break dividing the piece into two pieces. Opposite the curved outer edge, the broken edge is concave giving the piece an appearance of a crescent moon when both pieces are together. The object is worn with an overall dark brown patina. Across the centre are inscribed the letters LE[...], possibly part of a name. The next letter may be a…

Fragment of sub-rectangular lead sheet inscribed with runes. There are two clear rows of runes, one above the other, each bordered above and below by a groove similar to those making up the runes. There are small gaps between the rows; each gap is about half the height of the runes. The central line is the clearest, with at least seven readable runes, most contained within  rectangular panels, so divided from each other by pairs of vertical lines. The upper line has about five readable runes. There is space for part of a lower, third line in the acute-angled corner…

The name Edward can be clearly read across the bottom half of one face, with two horizontal lines inscribed underneath and one line through the entirety of the name. A sub rectangular, sandstone rock with ogham script inscribed down three of the four sides. The front and back sides are smooth. The rock is a dark grey colour and likely to be a shist type rock (metamorphic mudstone/shale). The incisions appear to have been done in a single action, not repeated. It measures 110 mm in length, 38 mm wide and 19 mm thick. It weighs 139 g. Katherine Forsyth (University of Glasgow) has confirmed that the markings are those of an ogham inscription. The script is that of an early style, most likely 5th to 6th Century but possibly as early as 4th Century. T…

Roman lead inscribed object: ovoid lump with very uneven, probably molten, reverse and flat front on which is engraved the image of a sailing ship, its upswept stern to the right, with straight but obliquely set prow to the left, mast, sail, rigging, and a row of shields along the bulwark. Clinker building is suggested by longitudinal lines on the hull. The vessel appears to be Roman and certainly does not resemble any post-Roman type of ship. 65.5 x 43.5mm. Thickness 18mm. Weight 279g. Mid 1st - 4th century.

Distorted Middle Saxon to Late Saxon lead plaque with runic inscription, rectangular with one rounded corner near which is a circular perforation. Dimensions; 29mm x 24mm x 1.2mm. Weight 7.73g. Hole diameter 4mm. The first character of the inscription appears to be missing but the sequence looks to read dwerg 'dwarf' and the plaque may have been intended as a charm against fever or some other disease. Slate fragment inscribed with markings which form letters of the ogam script which was an alphabetical script used for inscriptions in an archaic form of Irish from about the 6th to the 10th century AD. The alphabet consisted of 20 characters of this script, each consisting of strokes for consonants and of notches for vowels cut across a central line on a stone or piece of wood. The material is local Devonian slate or 'killas'. Some of the original face of the upper surface has since flaked off but, on the comparatively smooth remaining part, there are various lines which are cle…

An inscribed lead tag, probably a label for a plant or plant product. The object is a flat trapezoidal sheet of lead broken at the narrow end, where it may have been attached to something. The object has been both stamped and scratched with lettering, probably suggestive of re-use. The stamped lettering has been so deeply impressed that some areas of the tag have been lost. In addition there is a central portion of the tag missing. On one side the stamped lettering reads BLA[.]K / PA[.]E. Between these rows and slightly overlapping them is the incised word BVRG[.]MOT, probably bergamot…

Roughly square fragment of lead sheet which has been inscribed on both sides. It may also have been folded in half and the bottom edge is less well finished. One side is inscribed with rows of lettering consisting mostly of the repeated initials S.F.G in rows and with the numerals 1, 2, and possibly 6 or 0 below. There are two more deeply impressed lines at the right edge of this side. The other side is similarly inscribed with rows of initials as above and possibly also D (S.F.G.D.). Around these letters a large letter I has been more deeply impressed three times.
