A 6.1mm wide band of iron that has a projecting piece of iron, probably the spike from the ox goad projecting at 90° and rising now just 18.4mm in total height. It is extremely corroded and many fragments have flaked off (still present). This item needs urgent conservation to prevent further corrosion.
There is debate as to whether these are ox goads which would have been fitted onto the end of a stick and used to prod cattle or writing implements worn on the end of the finger or a short stick to scribe on wax or dip in ink. The examples at the British Museum are recorded as goads a…

A heavily corroded iron ring resembling cattle goads found on this site. The loop varies in thickness from 6.4mm to 13.3mm and one can just ascertain where the loop overlaps itself. The spike is now missing but would have risen up where the band is at its thickest. There is debate as to whether these are ox goads which would have been fitted onto the end of a stick and used to prod cattle or writing implements worn on the end of the finger or a short stick to scribe on wax or dip in ink.
