A Post-Medieval gold finger ring. The hoop is D-shaped in cross-section and gently widens on either shoulder to form a tall, pierced stop either side of a rectangular slot. The slot would have contained a setting or swivel, secured by a rivet through the stop on either side. The shoulders are decorated with foliage and pellets presumably representing grapes or berries. Examination under a microscope reveals traces of black and white enamel within the recesses of the foliage. The ring has been examined by Judy Rudoe, Curator, British Museum and Richard Blurton, Curator of South and S…

The bezel of a late medieval finger-ring, consisting of a heart sprouting flowers held by two hands. The remainder of the hoop is lost. These rings occur quite frequently as friendship or fede rings. The ring is silver-gilt and dates from the fifteenth or early sixteenth century. Dimensions: length 18 mm, height 8 mm. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. Silver finger-ring with hoop of flat D-section with upturned edges. Found in two roughly equal fragments that have been looped together and squeezed into two oval links. On the inner face an upper case inscription after a three-pointed initial mark BE TRVE INTRVE Inscription is likely to be a version of 'Be True In Heart' which occurs on a number of BM rings, e.g. Dalton no. 1130, in various spellings. The design with rim above and below also occurs on other rings of this date. Post-medieval, c. 16th - 17th century.

The ring comprises a broad band where the outer surface is decorated with a filigree pattern. The pattern consists of lozenges with a ring and pellet inside; each lozenge is separated by two further ring and pellets. There is a circumferential band of filigree above and below the decoration forming a border. Traces of a gold coloured layer remain in the crevasses around the filigree and on the internal surface of the ring. XRF result…

A squashed, albeit complete copper-alloy finger-ring (posy ring) of post-medieval date (17th/18th century AD). The exterior of the ring is plain and rounded, while the interior is flat; the hoop has a D-shaped cross-section. The interior bears the inscription 'I loue the' (I love thee), relatively spaced out round the hoop, and with a saltire stop at the end (cf. Evans 1931, 56). A mid-green patina survives in patches over a red-brown metal, with some traces of gilding evident. The hoop has been squashed slightly such that its plan is no longer circular. An unfiled transverse seam on …

A large copper alloy signet style ring, possibly worn over a gloved hand. The bevel which is oval in plan has a worn design that is unrecognisable and may have been intended to be a seal - the design is reminiscent of some Chinese lettering or a crude chi-ro symbol. The bezel is very worn one one edge. Signet rings and those intended to be worn over gloves may date from the 16th to 18th century. The size of this example suggests a later date.

A complete brass posy ring of post-medieval date. The ring is slightly distorted and the hoop variably worn. The exterior of the ring is plain while the interior bears the inscription 'I Love my god'. There are only a few scratches and blemishes to the exterior of the ring. The join of the hoop is connected using white metal. Brown marks on ring indicate a composition of brass rather than gold; x-ray fluorescence analysis has confirmed this.

A Post Medieval gold and enamel posy ring dating from about AD 1550 - 1700. The hoop is D shaped in cross section and has an internal upper case inscription reading: "• YOVRS - EVER - TO • COMADE (MNSHB)". The letters MA are beneath a breve (a sign which lets the reader know letters are missing), apparently indicating a missing M and N. The last five letters are enclosed in large round brackets, looking rather like a C and a reversed C. The letters are capital and have serifs.
