Treasure case : 2008 T700 Gold ring, the hoop broken at the back, formed of a thin flat band, with stylised scrolls at the shoulder, the oval bezel with a monkey in relief. There are traces of white enamel on the shoulders and green and black (?) on the bezel. While this ring conforms to 16th century shape and decoration, the use of a flat hoop and bezel, with metal of this thinness, is extremely unusual and has no parallels in the British Museum collection. While we cannot rule out the possibility that it may be 16th-17th century, the balance of probability is that it is no…

Gold ring decorated with geometric pattern on the exterior containing significant remains of white enamel; the interior with the inscription in French +PRENES EN GRE followed by a flower. Both inscription and flower retain almost all of the original black enamel. The inscription may be translated as ˜Accept this willingly". Note: The use of an amorous inscription in French continues the tradition of the late middle ages, but the use of Roman capitals together with the shape of the ring and the geometric pattern on the exterior has 16th and early 17th century parallels.

TREASURE CASE : 2013 T92. Description: A Post-Medieval gold finger ring with a very worn inscription on the inside of the band in lower case, reading Ruth 1.16’17 J F (?) The rest of the inscription is too worn to read .There is also a maker's mark, either A F (?) in a rectangular shield or J V (?) if read the other way up. Discussion: The biblical reference suggests this is a betrothal or wedding ring: "16. And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy …

A complete gold posy finger ring dating to the 16th or 17th century. The ring is a simple which is D-shaped in section. There is no decoration on the outside but there is an inscription on the inside which reads x I x LIKE x MY x CHOYCE x. All of the letters are captials and there is a small cross at the start, end and in between each of the words of the inscription. This inscription is known to have been used from the 16th century through to the early 18th century and the capital lettering suggests the earlier end of this date range (compared to IOW-879D84). A similar example i…

A gold posy ring dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1550 to 1650. The object is sub-circular in plan and D-shaped in section. The edges of the ring are quite sharp suggesting that it was not worn for long before being lost. There is a small nick in one side of the ring and it is slightly misshapen but this could be plough damage. The outside of the ring is smooth and undecorated. There is an inscription on the inside of the ring which reads LOVE + GOD + ABOVE + ALL with the first L in ALL retrograde and small crosses between each word. Roman lettering is used which suggest a…

A silver finger-ring of roughly D-shaped cross-section. The interior of the band is smooth and the exterior has heavily worn engravings. Each shoulder is decorated with four closely spaced hatched lines on either side, projecting downwards (away from the bezel). Further along the hoop are smaller, fainter hatched lines, projecting upwards. The bezel features a series of line that may be a crude monogram of several letters on top of one another, framed on either side by a transverse line from which emanate four short chips, and outside of this another line from which emanates a sunburs…

Description: A complete 16th or 17th century gold finger ring. The ring is cast so that the hoop is formed from sixteen domes or hemispheres, i.e. it has a semicircular section. One dome is elongated and probably acted as the bezel. The inner surface of the hoop is inscribed with the legend " * ALWAYES ONE >>>". Discussion: The ring can be compared to ESS-EDA7E6 (Treasure case 2004 T353: dated 16th - 17th century) which is of similar design, but with a different legend. For inscription comparison see Treasure case 2011 T837, PAS ID: WILT-8FB813. Dimensions: Thickness: 4…

The exterior surface of the hoop is undecorated and the interior is inscribed with the phrase "Patience is a vertue" in italic script. Dimensions: Weight: 1.17 grams. 22.5mm x 2.6mm x 0.7mm.
