Description: Two adjoining fragments from a 12th-century silver finger ring. The wide bezel is divided into three sub-rectangular panels, each field bearing engraved cruciform decoration with niello in the recesses. Between and beyond the panels the hoop is thinner. The finger-ring is now tarnished and somewhat bent out of original shape, with some areas of niello missing.
Discussion: The form of the finger-ring and some of its decorative motifs are comparable with an example published in the Treasure Annual Report 2004, no. 170.

A post-medieval silver broad hoop finger-ring with central raised band within sunken channels, the raised part engraved with geometric decoration and bordered by a dotted line above and below; the inside gilt, the exterior partially gilt. Engraved on the interior is a letter 'T'.
There are no precise parallels in the BM, but there is a 15th-century tradition of broad hooped rings with similar central bands within sunken channels and it seems reasonable to see this as a continuation of that tradition. Dalton 881 for example is of similar construction and bears an amuletic inscription…

Inside is an inscription stating "If you regard its' my reward:" However several letters are cut off at the top and bottom of the hoop, suggesting that the ring must have once been a simple straight-edged hoop, and has been cut down at a later date, perhaps to provide gold for other purposes.

This is a very heavy ring, with a flat octofoil bezel and square section hoop, angled at the shoulders. The back of the hoop inscribed ROBERT and the side at the back inscribed DUX. It is a puzzling ring as it seems to have borrowed features from earlier periods but the general shape and design has no pre-1706 parallels and the general consensus of opinion is that it is likely to be of relatively recent manufacture.

On the external face it is decorated with small transverse grooves in groups, but it is unclear to whether the ring would have originally been continuously decorated. The device is within an incised border and consists of a central heart, deeply set and probably cast, pierced by two engraved arrows in saltire, with the fletchings uppermost. …

A twisted gilded copper-alloy artefact: probably a finger-ring of early-medieval date. The object is now sub-oval in plan. It is formed of ?three wires twisted together. It has corroded to a red-brown colour with traces of overlying gilding. The date is suggested by objects found in the vicinity. Further, a finger-ring can be found illustrated in Evison (1988, 101; ref. 41.3); this find may be directly related.

A copper-alloy finger-ring probably of post-medieval date. The D-shaped hoop is slightly flattened, and is quite worn opposite the bezel. This latter is rectangular (6.45 by 5.55mm) and effectively a collet for a (missing) setting housed within a circular recess (Dia.: c. 3.4mm). The shoulders are decorated with transverse linear incisions taken from the centre to the edges: they are unaligned. Although the form of the ring is plausibly medieval its regularity suggests a later date. The artefact is now a dark green colour.

A fragment from a copper-alloy finger-ring of possible medieval date. The bezel is broadly octagonal with a deep oval recess, scratched to take its setting; the latter is now missing. On its lower surface the bezel is concave to fit the finger. The junction of bezel and hoop is stepped on both sides. On one of the sides merely a vestige of the hoop remains. On the other side the hoop is bent at an angle, seemingly flattened, and broken after 10.95mm. There appears to be a crude convex moulding at the shoulder.

The corroded bezel from a cast copper-alloy finger-ring of probable Roman date. The fragment is broadly hexagonal in plan. The upper surface of the ring has a large oval recess (10.0 x 8.4mm) which would have taken a setting; probable traces of adhesive are visible. The shoulders are slightly bevelled. The ring has been broken on both sides below the shoulders, but it is clear that the hoop was not very wide. Assuming this finger-ring is Roman in date it is best classified as a Guiraud Type 2 (Henig Type II/III).

Cast copper-alloy ?finger-ring with rotary key. The hoop has one straight side (at the junction with the shank and bit) and the curving side, which is incomplete, tapers to a point. The end of the stem is tubular. The bit is incomplete. The form of this key, if part of a finger-ring is different to other known Roman key finger-rings. Since the hoop tapers strongly, and the key is generally robust, it is unclear if this may have served a s a ring – although it may have been suspended from its D-shaped handle.
