Fragment of a silver Roman finger ring with a pyramidal bezel consisting of a series of diminishing squares, the shoulders consist of two circular knops flanking the loop. The loop has an oval cross-section 2.7mm wide 1.8mm thick. This loop has been truncated, so that only a 11mm section remains on one side, whilst it is completely missing from the other side of the bezel. A similar example has been excavated form South Shields Roman Fort (Allason-Jones L & Miket, 1084, 121-122), and would date to the end of the roman period. In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10%…

Description of Object Roman silver finger ring of keeled type. Oval hoop, rectangular in section, expands via a sharp carination to triangular shoulders with shallow mouldings and feathered edges. A wide cast copper alloy finger ring, with a think D-shaped section. The hoop of the ring has been decorated with three incised lines, now heavily worn. No other decoration can be seen. The copper alloy is a dark brownish-green colour. This ring probably dates to the Medieval period but could be Roman. An exact parallel could not be found in the standard literature.

A copper alloy signet finger ring dating from the late Medieval or early post medieval period. The ring is circular and has a diameter of 27.7mm. It has a flat hexagonal bezel which is 11.8mm long. There is a triangular panel on each side of the bezel. The bezel is incised with either an “M” or ligated “A” and “N”. The hoop is incised with spiral lines to me it look as if the hoop is twisted. This style of signet ring usually dates from the fifteenth or early sixteenth century (Geake, 2001). The metal of this ring is solid but it has a very dark green patina with a rough texture.

A crudely made post-medieval gold finger ring. The hoop is circular and narrows towards the bottom; it is curved in cross-section with the inside of the hoop concave. The square raised bezel has a female portrait facing left, and incuse lettering to either side: the letters appear to be 'RICI' to the left, and 'VI' to the right. Analysis has shown that the ring is composed of 22 carat gold and the ring was reported under the Treasure Act 1996. Although it imitates late Roman rings in its general appearance, it does not do so in any other respect, and there is no evidence from the w…

A broken strip of gold, possibly from a finger ring, possibly intended to be used as bullion. The inner surface is smooth, whilst the outer has a series of mouldings. These include two opposed possible snake heads on either side of a flat oval section (the bezel?), and other crude rectangular block motifs. There are also a series of file marks along one of the edges, which do not appear to be ancient.

This is a very heavy ring, with a flat octofoil bezel and square section hoop, angled at the shoulders. The back of the hoop inscribed ROBERT and the side at the back inscribed DUX. It is a puzzling ring as it seems to have borrowed features from earlier periods but the general shape and design has no pre-1706 parallels and the general consensus of opinion is that it is likely to be of relatively recent manufacture.

Description: A late medieval silver-gilt finger ring, the hoop of which being decorated with a circumferential zig-zag comprising a shouldered channel, which forms a pattern of five upper and five lower half lozenges, each one filled with raised pellets creating a granular effect. This contained within two shouldered rims. There is an indeterminate mark within a cartouche stamped on the inside of the band. On the opposite side to this mark a join of the hoop can be discerned, indicating that the ring was constructed from a formed strip and not cast in the round. The ring exhibits a ce…

A medieval silver-gilt finger-ring set with a clear stone (probably rock-crystal). The back of the hoop is cabled and the shoulders left plain apart from a central groove which widens into a spandrel occupied by a simple foliate motif. The bezel is raised and moulded into a pie-crust form to simulate the petals of a flower. The finger-ring is silver-gilt and dates from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth centuries.

A cast gold posy ring of probable early 18th century date. The flat gold band is inscribed on the inside 'content hath noe want'. The script could be an 18th century hand. The maker’s mark (TH) written in black letter is most likely identified with one of two smallworkers, the first of which entered his mark in 1711 and the second in 1717 (Grimwade, nos. 2800, 2801). As the find probably dates to later than 1706 it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996 (N. Awais-Dean, The British Museum, 16.04.07).

A narrow gold finger ring of probable 17th century date. The ring has a shallow section and is dented and misshapen. The interior of the plain band is inscribed in lower case italic script: + thyncke on me. Two different versions of this inscription are recorded by Joan Evans in 'English Posies and Posy-Rings' (Oxford, 1931), p. 97: Think on mee (from a will of 1618) and + THINKE. ON. ME (BM, Dalton 1302). The style of lettering, the spelling, and the use of a short text on the ring all suggest a date in the 17th century. Dimensions: 19mm (external diameter) by 4mm (width of band). Wei…
