A Post Medieval lead alloy finger ring probably for a child or a toy probably dating late 17th - 18th century. This finger ring has a circular-sectioned band that connects into the back of the bezel. The bezel is circular with an inset faceted, green glass. There is a beaded border around the edge of the bezel. The style of the bezel and the stone is very similar to cuff links of this date for example: LON-CD52E3. Similar finger rings are also recorded on the database: BERK-4DF527; BERK-6DBD46; LON-D33DC6; SWYOR-C5CF04. Dimensions: diameter of band: 14.80mm; diameter of bezel:…

Roman ring: a 3rd-century keeled finger ring, probably of lead alloy. The ring has a wide, flat band, angular shoulders, and is flared to form two large triangular fields either side of the bezel (now damaged, so its nature cannot be assessed). The fields contain ornament in the form of paired lines and punched circles. The ring is not complete, and has been bent into shape post-discovery. It is otherwise in poor condition, with a dull -grey surface colour. Mass 4.0g. External diameter 21.0mm. Depth 14.5mm. Max thickness 1.4mm

A cast lead alloy finger ring of probable late medieval date. The hoop measures 23.3mm in diameter, 3.5mm in width and 2mm in thickness. The damaged rectangular bezel measures 13mm by 8.6mm and the ring weighs 4.2g. The hoop has a D-shaped cross-section, with an external curve. It widens slightly to meet with the bezel which is flanked by a transverse line on each side and is decorated with an incised saltire cross. A number of finger rings with this general form can be seen in part 1 of the 'Salisbury Museum Catalogue' (Saunders 1991, p. 46, fig. 12, nos. 17, 18 and 19).

Modern ring; cast lead alloy joke finger ring of probable 20th century date. The ring is crudely cast with a broad band and a flattened area at the bezel. The bezel is quatrilobed with rough moulded decoration of lines and loops. The band has a hollow ridge running along the length of the centre of it which extends into a little knop at the back of the ring. This knop could be attached to a rubber bulb full of water which would be hidden in the palm of the hand. There is a tiny, pinprick hole in the bezel, at the end of the water channel such that, when squeezed, the bulb could shoot w…

An incomplete lead-alloy finger-ring of probable late medieval to early post-medieval date. Plain signet rings bearing a single letter are relatively common finds and appear to belong mostly to the 15th or 16th century. The poor quality of this ring (see below) and the fact that it is made of lead-alloy suggest that it may be a toy. The bezel is circular in plan and has a raised rim around its circumference. The indented letter 'H' has been executed at angle and is crudely depicted. The shoulders taper into the hoop, which is of flat section. The back of the hoop is missing. The …

A Post Medieval lead alloy incomplete ring, probably a finger ring, dating from the late 17th century. Approximately half of the ring remains. The ring comprises a broad band where the outer surface is decorated with a filigree pattern. The pattern consists of lozenges with a ring and pellet inside; each lozenge is separated by two further ring and pellets. There is a circumferential band of filigree above and below the decoration forming a border. Traces of a gold coloured layer remain in the crevasses around the filigree and on the internal surface of the ring. XRF result…

Lead Alloy finger ring. Cast vermiform or corrugated ring; a mould line suggests this was made in a two-part mould. Possibly an example of cheap base metal jewellery whose form would imitate that of more expensive versions made from precious metal. Broken into two joining pieces. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1350. Diameter: 21.2mm, Thickness: 2.3mm, Weight: 1.12gms.

A cast lead alloy finger ring of probably 16th or 17th century date. The ring is of 'Fede' type, with a bezel formed from two clasped hands symbolising love or marriage. At the shoulders of the ring are pairs of vertical moulded ridges presumably intended to represent cuffs. The band is D-shaped in section, undecorated and with an old break opposite the bezel. A casting seam is visible running around the circumference of the ring, suggesting it was cast in a two-part mould. This ring measures 19.31mm in diameter, 6.91mm in height at bezel (3.99mm at band), 1.86mm in thickness and 2.0…

Possible cast lead finger ring. Uncertain date - most likely to be post-Medieval or modern. D-shaped hoop made from a strip with the ends overlapping and joined at the back. Original internal diameter of hoop c.12mm, thickness of hoop 2.3mm-4.9mm (max at back), diameter of bezel 18.5mm, thickness of bezel c.2.0mm, weight 7.32g.

Cast lead allow item, possibly a Post medieval finger ring. It has a circular bezel with a flat back and moulded front. It is shaped into a central pellet surrounded by two concentric rings. Between the pellet and inner ring is a recessed area. The two rings are linked by 5 raised pellets, between some of the pellets are recessed areas, between others openwork spaces. On the back of the possible bezel is a raised transverse line which extends into projecting stubs at either side These are bent with old breaks at the end but appear to have extended into a circular shape. A late Medieval – late Post Medieval lead alloy (pewter) finger ring, probably for a child (15th – 18th century). The band of the finger-ring is circular in cross-section and the bezel has not been cast integrally. The bezel is small and circular, decorated with a central pellet and scalloped border. Geoff Egan, Post Medieval Finds Advisor, stated that it was impossible to ascribe a more precise date to this ring. Dimensions: diameter: 15.83mm; weight: 0.64g. Dating confirmed by Geoff Egan, PAS Finds Advisor Medieval and Post Medieval Artefacts.

Thin sheets of lead alloy, probably pewter. Possible finger ring fragment, with bezel at the front, or possible elaborate potmend. Layerd circular sheets of lead arranged in a way which suggest the bezel of a finger ring. The 'reverse' has a narrow strip of lead 5mm wide and 2mm thick, soldered onto it, curving slightly to suggest the frame for a ring. Probable post-medieval date, 18th century onwards.

The item is an oval shaped loop in plan. The loop is either cracked and broken or it was made by bending a rectangular band to form the loop. The crack does suggest a break. The loop is rectangular in section. The outer face of the loop has gothic lettering in high-relief. There is also a '+' created by four sub-square punches.

Terminal from a snake-ring, made from a very greyish soft metal, apparently a lead alloy. The hoop of the ring is circular in cross-section at the break, 3 mm in diameter; it quickly flares out to form a snake's head bezel which is 10 mm wide and 3 mm thick. The head is oval or lozengiform, and is quite stylised, with grooves along the edge on the rear half of the head but no other visible decoration. The head tapers into the hoop with no border between them, and the fragment is strongly curved to fit around the finger.

This object is probably a cast lead alloy finger ring that has been crushed (although it could also have functioned as a button with a long shank, c.f. Egan 1991, 274 no. 1381). It consists of a circular flat disc with a casting seam across the reverse, onto which a narrow hoop has been soldeered. The disc has raised decoration on the upmost side. This is in the form of a central rosette of pellets with six lines radiating outwards from it. There is a pellet in each of the six segments. This is surrounded by a rope-twist border. Part of the edge of the disc has been lost.

Cast lead alloy posy style finger ring of probably post medieval or early modern date (1600 – 1750). The hoop of the finger ring is irregular in plan, although originally it would have been circular. This distortion is likely to have been caused by wear and movement in the ploughsoil. The outer face of the hoop has been decorated with a series of both cast and pierced designs. These are based on a series of floral and heart shaped patterns. The design consists of two conjoined hearts, the edges of which have been pierced to emphasis the pattern, these elements are situated at the cen…
