A copper alloy finger ring which has been compressed into a single flat band. In its current state it is 25.8mm long, 4.3mm wide and 2.6mm thick. The band is decorated with a row of crosses (+) right around the band, and there is an oval bezel which is very worn. The ring has a deep green and brown patina. It probably dates from the post-medieval period but no close published parallel has been found.

A gold post-medieval posy ring with a D-shaped band. The exterior is undecorated. The interior bears an inscription in italics reading vertue passeth riches (i.e. Virtue surpasses riches). Discussion: The ring is almost identical to one discovered at Brokenborough, Wiltshire (2003 T223). There are four posy rings within the British Museum's collection with the same inscription, although no spelling variant is identical to this particular ring. Two of these rings have a maker's mark which can be dated to pre-1707: 1961, 1202.366: same mark on mourning ring of 1668 1961, 120…

Plain sheet metal band to which is attached a separate bezel with curvilinear and rhomboid design; the outline of the design is in relief, and the ground sunken, where gilding is retained. The band is crumpled but the bezel retains a curvature which is probably intended. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1550-1750. Width (as found): 25.5mm, Width (of band): 4.2mm, Thickness (band): 0.6mm, Thickness (at bezel): 2.2mm, Weight: 1.90gms.

A Post-Medieval gold finger ring. The hoop is D-shaped in cross-section and gently widens on either shoulder to form a tall, pierced stop either side of a rectangular slot. The slot would have contained a setting or swivel, secured by a rivet through the stop on either side. The shoulders are decorated with foliage and pellets presumably representing grapes or berries. Examination under a microscope reveals traces of black and white enamel within the recesses of the foliage. The ring has been examined by Judy Rudoe, Curator, British Museum and Richard Blurton, Curator of South and S…
