Finger ring with a copper alloy hoop and a separate band of 9 carat gold wrapped around it, expanding into a bezel which is cut away and narrowed in the centre and decorated with two pairs of grooves either side of an incised cross. The style of the expanded bezel and the pattern on it suggest that the ring is at least 18th century in date, but the fact that 9 carat gold has been incorporated in this way suggests that the ring is more modern.
Bailey (1997) illustrates a copper alloy finger ring with a similar design of crosses and lines on page 27, which is dated to the 18th centur…

A cast copper alloy Post-medieval finger ring. The ring is large with an oval bevel. The sides of the bevel is decorated with a moulded floral pattern. The bezel itself is flat and very worn, and although no initials or image can be seen, it is likely that the initials or mark of a merchant adorned the bevel top. The bevel top measures 15.94mm long and 11.98mm wide. There is no trace of gildering or silvering, although this may have been worn completely away. This is a signet type ring, or merchant's ring, and it probably dates from the late 16th century, through to the late 18th.

A incomplete cast band of copper alloy. It is a rectangular band, with a flat profile. It has been bent into a square, although there is only three sides of the square present, and two of those are incomplete. One of the breaks seems to have worn, although the other could have happened more recently. There are sections of cross hatched decoration on each side of the square. It is possibly this is a finger ring, that has bent out of shape. Apart from the breaks it is in good condition, and has a dark green patina. It appears it to be post medieval.

A complete cast copper alloy finger ring. It has a flat rectangular cross section, and the band is the same width all the way around. There is a pelleted border on both edges. Around the band at random locations are stamped decoration of a cross pattee. Some are partially stamped, some stamped over the border, and some on top of one another. It is unclear as to why these random crosses have been stamped onto the ring, and no comparisons can be made. The ring is in very good condition. It is likely this is post medieval due to the condition and the shape / cross-section of the band.

Post-medieval gold posy ring. A very thin flat band inscribed on the interior with 'content is a treasure'. Makers marks seriphed PE in a rectangle. The hoop is slightly squashed.
Dimensions: Length: 17 mm; Width: 22 mm; Weight: 1.37 g Discussion: a similar mark recorded in Grimwade (1976, pp. 158), recorded as William Pearson, small worker entered 1704. If it is indeed this maker and if the ring was manufactured in the first eight years of the mark being entered then this ring would fall within the remit of the Treasure Act.

A Post-Medieval gold finger ring. The hoop is D-shaped in cross-section and gently widens on either shoulder to form a tall, pierced stop either side of a rectangular slot. The slot would have contained a setting or swivel, secured by a rivet through the stop on either side. The shoulders are decorated with foliage and pellets presumably representing grapes or berries. Examination under a microscope reveals traces of black and white enamel within the recesses of the foliage.
The ring has been examined by Judy Rudoe, Curator, British Museum and Richard Blurton, Curator of South and S…
