A complete and misshapen gold posy finger ring of early eighteenth century date. Length: 23.5mm, width: 12.0mm. Weight 1.27g. Treasure case no. 2007 T244 (disclaimed). The ring is inscribed on the inside of the D-section hoop "I cannot show the love I O". This is followed by a stamped maker's mark in a rectangular punch of the letters PE in Roman capitals. This inscription appears on a ring in the British Museum's collections. It is listed in Joan Evans "English Posies and Posy Rings" (1931). The maker's mark appears to be that of William Pearson, who registered as a smallworker in 1704.

A gold mourning ring dating from 1753. The ring's outside diameter is 21.6mm, the band's width is 3.3mm, its thickness is 2.1mm and it weighs 4.2g. The parish registers for Milborne Port record that a William Byshop married a Sara Hallet on 23rd October 1739 (Hugh Vincent, pers. comm.). Gold posy ring from the late 16th to early 17th centuries. Treasure find- 2007-T156. The British Museum curator report- 'Small gold finger ring, slightly out of shape. Foliate design on the external surface and inscribed inside + DON + DAMI, followed by a sprig. Very slight traces of black enamel are visible on both the inner and outer faces.' Discussion: The style of the capital letter inscription compares well with other 16th and early 17th century rings in The British Museum's collection. The precious metal content of this finger ring fulfils the requirements of the …

Gold mourning ring dating to 1679. The inside band is inscribed 'Mrs Sarah Doding died 26th Nov 79'. The outside of the band is decorated with engraved designs of a poppy, a rose and a thistle with a black background (in enamel). The bezel consists of a skull and crossbones picked out in white enamel. It is in very good condition and all the detail is very clear. The design is significant of the times and represent certain things. The rose is for England, the thistle for Scotland (and the Stuarts) and the poppy for Holland.

A Post Medieval gold finger ring - memento mori (1670-1740). The plain thin gold band is engraved on the exterior with a skull and inscribed inside in lower case: 'Remember to dye', with a maker's mark GB in a quatrefoil shield with a pellet above and below. This type of ring had a long life from around 1670 to the 1730s, but as the mark is not listed in the standard London goldsmiths' marks sources, it is not possible to confirm a pre-1708 date for this ring. J. Rudoe British Museum 24.9.08 Dimensions: diameter: 19.70mm; width: 3.50mm; thickness: 1.03mm; weight: 2.50g.

A post-medieval gold posy ring. A small thin band decorated on the exterior with a running scroll contain traces of the original white enamel; inscribed inside in capitals: BE + TRUE + IN + HART. This inscription is followed by a maker's mark: 'M' in a rectangular punch. There are traces of black enamel within the lettering and the punch. This small ring is formed of a simple plaited band. It is likely to be post-medieval in date, but in the absence of any parallels in the British Museum, there is no evidence to confirm that it is more than 300 years old. Consequently, as the ring cannot be securely dated to pre-1706 it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

A post-medieval gold finger ring which is formed through a series of vertical rectangles, each keyed to recieve enamel which survives in tiny amounts. Inside is an inscription stating "If you regard its' my reward:" However several letters are cut off at the top and bottom of the hoop, suggesting that the ring must have once been a simple straight-edged hoop, and has been cut down at a later date, perhaps to provide gold for other purposes.

A crudely made post-medieval gold finger ring. The hoop is circular and narrows towards the bottom; it is curved in cross-section with the inside of the hoop concave. The square raised bezel has a female portrait facing left, and incuse lettering to either side: the letters appear to be 'RICI' to the left, and 'VI' to the right. Analysis has shown that the ring is composed of 22 carat gold and the ring was reported under the Treasure Act 1996. Although it imitates late Roman rings in its general appearance, it does not do so in any other respect, and there is no evidence from the w…

A cast gold posy ring of probable early 18th century date. The flat gold band is inscribed on the inside 'content hath noe want'. The script could be an 18th century hand. The maker’s mark (TH) written in black letter is most likely identified with one of two smallworkers, the first of which entered his mark in 1711 and the second in 1717 (Grimwade, nos. 2800, 2801). As the find probably dates to later than 1706 it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996 (N. Awais-Dean, The British Museum, 16.04.07).

A narrow gold finger ring of probable 17th century date. The ring has a shallow section and is dented and misshapen. The interior of the plain band is inscribed in lower case italic script: + thyncke on me. Two different versions of this inscription are recorded by Joan Evans in 'English Posies and Posy-Rings' (Oxford, 1931), p. 97: Think on mee (from a will of 1618) and + THINKE. ON. ME (BM, Dalton 1302). The style of lettering, the spelling, and the use of a short text on the ring all suggest a date in the 17th century. Dimensions: 19mm (external diameter) by 4mm (width of band). Wei…

Treasure Number: 2006 T447. Post Medieval gold mourning ring dated to 1674. The band is simple, with a small engraving of a skull on the exterior. The interior is inscribed in lower case script: 'E : Kinsman obijt 28 Maij 74. o. y. en', with maker's mark GW in a rectangular shield. The hoop has an external diameter of 17.31mm, an internal diameter of 14.65mm, is 3.48mm wide, 1.11mm thick and weighs 2.51g. This is a characteristic type of the period, though the spelling of 'obijt' and Maij' is unusual, and the interpretation of the letters that appear after the date is unclear. T…

Date: 17th century Description: Gold posy ring. D-shaped hoop which is slightly misshapen. Inscribed to the inside 'the love Is true that I O U x'. Preceding the inscription are the remains of a word, which appears to have been rubbed off. All that can be discerned are flourishes of the initial capital, possible 'T', and an end letter, possibly 'e'. Following the inscription are remnants of a punch, which is likely to be a maker's mark, although this is unidentifiable.

Gold finger ring with a slightly misshapen hoop, which broadens at the shoulders to meet the bezel. The bezel is comprised of a rectangular red glass to imitate a precious stone, in a rectangular setting. Arched decoration surrounds the setting. The bezel of this ring has close parallels with 2004 T485 (see Treasure Annual Report 2004, no.369), but this ring is a 19th-century imitation of a medieval-style ring. Therefore, this is classed as not Treasure.

A Post Medieval gold posy-ring. The posy-ring is a D-shaped band. The band is, from appearance and weight, made substantially from gold. The exterior is undecorated, but the interior surface has an English inscription reading NO FREND TO FAITH. The single line inscription in upper case suggests a late 16th to first half 17th century date. The diameter of the ring is 17.95mm on the exterior, and 16.2mm on the interior. The height of the ring is 2.55mm. It weighs 1.51g. As the ring dates to the late 16th or first half of the 17th century and the gold content is more than 10%, the ring f…
