Treasure case 2009 T208 - returned to finder Gold fede ring with clasped hands holding a heart, rosettes flanking the ‘cuffs’. Inscribed ‘Noe recompense but love’. Maker’s mark MB in rectangle: the same mark is on British Museum finger-ring 1961,1202.254 but not identifiable in any standard reference works (see BM website under search the collection database/museum provenance and number search for images). The design of the ring suggests an 18th Century date rather than 17th Century date, and it is therefore unlikely to be more than 300 years old. Judy Rudoe Curator of…

A incomplete cast band of copper alloy. It is a rectangular band, with a flat profile. It has been bent into a square, although there is only three sides of the square present, and two of those are incomplete. One of the breaks seems to have worn, although the other could have happened more recently. There are sections of cross hatched decoration on each side of the square. It is possibly this is a finger ring, that has bent out of shape. Apart from the breaks it is in good condition, and has a dark green patina. It appears it to be post medieval. 22.64mm x 13.75mm x 1.34mm…

A complete cast copper alloy finger ring. It has a flat rectangular cross section, and the band is the same width all the way around. There is a pelleted border on both edges. Around the band at random locations are stamped decoration of a cross pattee. Some are partially stamped, some stamped over the border, and some on top of one another. It is unclear as to why these random crosses have been stamped onto the ring, and no comparisons can be made. The ring is in very good condition. It is likely this is post medieval due to the condition and the shape / cross-section of the band. …

An incomplete cast copper alloy finger ring. Part of the hoop and the bezel are present. The hoop is bent almost into a straight band. The hoop is circular in cross-section, widening towards the bezel. The bezel is square and flat. On the front of the bezel are 3 raised areas, 2 circular ones evenly spaced at the top and one larger sub circular in the center at the bottom. It appears that this could be some kind on animal face, although the ring is very worn so it is hard to distinguish. The breaks on the ring are old as they have also worn. it is in a poor condition. Although no comp…

Description: Post-Medieval gold finger-ring. Plain D-shaped band, slightly misshapen. Plain, worn interior with no makers mark or inscription Dimensions: Diameter: 22mm Band width: 3.3mm Thickness: 0.8mm Weight: 3g Discussion: The absence of maker's mark or inscription means it is not possible to accurately date this ring. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it cannot be securely dated to pre-1710 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

A complete Post Medieval gold mourning finger ring, dating to AD 1695. The finger ring has a D-shaped cross-section. It is inscribed inside in 'R C ob Dec 95'. Gold posy ring. A plain exterior, inscribed inside: 'Liue in loue and feare the lord' with the initials C above W M, standing for a husband and wife or betrothed couple whose surname began with C. This ring bears a maker's mark WH, or possibly HM. It has not been possible to identify the maker's mark. This inscription, and also the fashion for placing the initials in a triangle, continued well into the 18th century. There is therefore not enough evidence to confirm that this ring is pre-1706 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.
