Post Medieval to Modern gold finger ring. The band has a 'D' shaped cross section and has an inscription 'Content is a treasure' with the maklers mark Rn in a rectangle on the inside of the band. The ring weighs 4.41 grams and has a diameter of 19.66mm. Discussion: A similar inscription can be seen in Evans 90, 'Noe treasure to content' which has maker's mark dated 1630-62. However the makers mark appears to match AF.1338 (dated 17th- 18th Century - British Museum collection). Based on the design and the above information the ring cannot be securely dated to pre-1711 and as su…

A gold posy type finger ring, dating AD1601-1800. A circular plain hoop, no decoration. Inside an inscription reads In love abide till death devide. Makers mark of EB printed right of the inscription. The makers mark most likely belongs to Edward Blagrave, a goldsmith who worked as a ring maker in London. He is first recorded in 1668, appears in listings 1677-1688 for sub-standard work and is recorded as a warden of the London Goldsmiths' Company in 1709. The inscription "In love abide till death devide" was a common phrase to find on a ring during this period. Phrases from poems…

A Post Medieval silver gilt finger-ring, dating to the early 16th century. The ring is D-shaped in section and is decorated on one side only. The flat face is on the inside of the object. The ring has been broken and bent so that it resembles an S-shaped strip of metal. The decoration consists of alternating panels; one is a plain square with double lines forming a border and the other is rectangular with two voided crosses over five horizontal lines of beading. On the back there appears to be a maker's mark but, due to wear, it is difficult to determine. The mark appears to be two ci…
