Large finger-ring of shiny white silver. The hoop is 24 mm in external diameter, 2.5 mm wide and 1 mm thick opposite the bezel. At the shoulder the thickness swells to a 4 mm tall bezel, forming a low 'stirrup' shape. The top of the bezel is now a little crushed and the ?oval setting is empty; a small rounded white glass bead survives separately, but looks too small for the setting. There is no decoration on the hoop. James Robinson from the British Museum has seen this ring and dates it to the 13th century. He has recommended that it be disclaimed.

Copper-alloy finger-ring, circular internally and gently octagonally facetted externally, 17 mm internal diameter, 20 mm external diameter and 4 mm wide. No decoration or inscription is visible internally or externally, and no seam is visible. Such a plain ring is hard to date with certainty, but it is unlike published examples of medieval rings and so I think that a post-medieval date is likely.

Largish copper-alloy finger-ring, originally set with a gem. The hoop is 18 mm in internal diameter, and biconvex in section with a gentle internal curve and a steeper external one. It narrows to 2 mm wide and 1.5 mm thick opposite the bezel, and flares evenly to the bezel which is 7.5 mm wide and 3.5 mm thick. There is an evenly shaped oval setting (10 x 6.5 mm) which has lost its gem, but which has the remains of bright white adhesive. This has a concave surface, perhaps worn or dissolved away. The 'gem' was probably of glass, given the large and regular shape of the setting. T…

Chunky copper-alloy finger-ring, 25 mm external and 21 mm internal diameter. 6 mm deep, the section is slightly convex internally (with lots of filemarks but feeling smooth) and has a central raised convex band externally with a groove above and below. Each groove has tiny transverse ribs in its base. The central convex band is engraved (with a wheel) with seven letters, one now obscured as corrosion has led to the loss of the surface. The remaining ones read MARIA M (see sketch in SMR file). A nicely made ring but with a very badly engraved inscription - the letters are hardly readable.

Description: Complete silver finger ring now squashed flat and with a much damaged outer face. The hoop has a rectangular section. Its outer face is decorated with borders consisting of tiny diagonal grooves and within these there are stars and crosses and possibly foliate motifs. The word 'MIZ[P]AH' is also visible in relief on the exterior of the band. Unfortunately most of the original design is now destroyed by deep grooves and scratches, perhaps caused by damage whilst in the plough soil. Dimensions: Diameter: 27.74mm (as squashed flat) Height: 7.81mm (of hoop) Thickn…

Bezel from a finger-ring, made entirely from copper alloy and curved to fit around the finger. The bezel flares from breaks at the shoulders, to accommodate a raised flat-topped oval boss 8 x 6 mm. There are faint traces of an engraved line around the edge of the bezel, but the edges are fragmentary and so this is uncertain. Surviving width 7.5 mm, length 16 mm.

Crushed and broken silver finger-ring. The hoop is incomplete and flares gently from the breaks to become 4 mm wide. The oval bezel is 6.5 mm wide and has a single engraved letter - a V with a serif at the bottom and at the top of the right-hand stroke, then a half-length stroke running down again from this top serif as if a W was intended but the engraver interrupted halfway through. The ring is crushed and one half of the hoop is now detached.

Gold finger-ring, triangular in section. On the inner face is a single engraved 'R'. On the outer two faces are the names of the Three Wise Men; one face has IASPAR: MELChIOR and the other has :BALTAZAR. Before Iaspar is an engraved saltire with a dot in each angle. The ring is large, 20 mm diameter internally and 23 mm diameter externally. The hoop is 3 mm wide and 1.5 mm thick. It is well made and the letters are clearly engraved; the As have a curl at the left-hand end, the M is Lombardic, the Z is crossed and there are serifs. A probable Roman copper alloy penanular finger ring in the form of a snake and dating from about AD 100-400. The hoop is sub-circular in plan and is probably smaller than originally intended having been coiled. The terminal expands to form the head of the snake, but does not appear to be complete. The other terminal is of similar form and possibly represent another head however could also be the tail. The object has been squashed inwards and is incomplete. It has a dark green patina. Examples of similar finger rings which can be found on the database are KENT-95BA94 and SWYOR-13E3D6.

Unusual 15th/early 16th century signet ring, perhaps from the lower end of the market. The hoop is D-shaped or biconvex, 4 mm wide, and large (c. 25 mm external diameter). The bezel is a raised oval 9 x 10.5 mm and 2.5 mm thick, which is very shallowly engraved with an initial I between two branches. Some lines at the top of the I may have been intended to represent a crown. There is no border. Signet rings with initials of this date usually have a hoop flattened to accommodate a deeply engraved bezel.

Treasure reference number 2013 T317: a medieval gold finger ring dating to the 13th century. The ring has a raised oval bezel containing a saphire. The hoop is circular, slightly distorted, and is triangular in cross-section. An inscription runs around both outer faces, divided by three quatrefoils or flowerheads. The inscription reads: +AMOR VINCIT IOMI (Love conquers all); AIE.SVI.ICI EN LIV D ('I am here in place of a friend/lover). The inscription is broken as follows: +AM/ORVI/NCIT/IOMI//AIE[l OR .]/SAI.I/CIEN/LIVD. It is unclear whether the letters AIE SVI stand for 'I am', …

A copper-alloy finger ring of probable Post-Medieval date. It has a plain band that is D-shaped in section and expands towards the bezel. The bezel itself is rectangular in form with vertical grooves to either side at the shoulders. It is decorated on its front face with an incised motif, perhaps intended to be a six-pointed star or similar. The entire object has very worn surfaces with only traces of a dark green patina visible in places. It measures 20.11mm in diameter, 4.95mm in height, 2.02mm in thickness (at bezel) and 2.10g in weight. This is a finger ring of probable Post-Medie…

Finger-ring made from copper-alloy sheet. The wide bezel flares gently and is slightly domed; it is decorated with unevenly set ring-and-dot motifs. Although there is a lot of corrosion, it appears from the way that the decoration is obscured towards the tapering ends that the sheet was decorated first, and made into a ring subsequently. The tapered ends are bent, showing that they were once twisted around each other, but are now incomplete. Very dark patina with spots of brighter green corrosion. Surviving width at centre of bezel 9 mm; dimensions of the ring as bent when held fl…

Finger-ring made from copper-alloy sheet. The bezel is flat and lozengiform, and is decorated with small, closely set ring-and-dot motifs. The narrow ends would originally probably have twisted around each other, but are now missing. Rough light brown patina. Finger-ring of 'keeled' shape, apparently made of silver. The hoop is broken in one place, with a piece missing, and cracked across in another place; the metal is obviously brittle, and has a rough light grey patina. The shoulders are decorated each with four engraved lines, which follow in pairs the flaring line of the shoulder. They meet a transverse groove which delineates the square bezel. This is then further outlined with an inner square, within which is a zigzag line - possibly an M - with further lines beneath, perhaps reading TH. The ring is not perfectly circular but me…

Fragment of finger-ring, possibly made from silver. Rectangular in cross-section, 3 mm wide and 1 mm thick, it is decorated with opposed alternating V-shaped edge notches creating a relief zigzag effect. Just under a quarter of the hoop survives. It is similar to, although bigger than, an example from Colchester (Crummy 1983, no. 1766).
